House of Shadows: Written and Video iPhone App Review
We’ve been making an effort lately to bring you some of the best and brightest Halloween games to be hitting the App Store. We feel it’s our sort of civic duty as app reviewers to ensure your iPhone is studded with the best seasonal offerings, and the spookiest titles. As such, we can’t help but mention House of Shadows by developer Armor Games. The app is a near perfect combination of creepy artwork, brilliant puzzles, adventurous ghost running and simplicity. Best of all, you can catch our full review of the app below! Starting with:
Concept and Gameplay
House of Shadows begins like almost all creepy intellectual properties: It involves a large, nearly vacant mansion full of ghosts, goblins and ghouls. You play as a child (either male or female) who must explore the entirety of the abode. To do this, you’ll be tapping along the screen, sending your avatar walking in that direction. Your character will collect various points and point drops along the way. They will also run over trap door activators and keys. You’ll need to leverage all of this to correctly find the next door out, procure the items needed to unlock it, and then escape.
Sound too easy? We thought so. This is why the developers have also included a full bevy of ghosts and other enemies who are hell-bent (pun intended) on stopping you. If they spot you running about, they’ll become alarmed, and then chase you. The pace is pitch-perfect: They’re quick, but not too much so. This gives you ample time to evade them—and just as much time to freak out. All in all, the app is a simply marvelous cocktail, and one that we cannot seem to recommend enough.
Design and Graphics
We’d like to take a quick moment to simply say this: The game is absolutely gorgeous. It’s got a unique light and shading engine beneath the hood that—with built-in Retina display support—adds up to some seriously good-looking gameplay. Furthermore, we could’t get enough of the simple controls. You need only a finger to play the game, which means it takes mere seconds to learn. The puzzles have also been laid out with a clever touch, which makes them bloody fun to solve.
We’ll spin it to you this way: House of Shadows is available for a dollar, and is a Universal application. This means you’ll get the full 60 levels of gorgeous graphics and killer puzzles on all your iDevices, and for less than the cost of a soda. That makes the game a tremendous value, as well as an easy recommendation from us here at the iPhone App Review.
House of Shadows requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
