Shy Beetles: Written iPhone App Review

Shy Beetles is a fun, quirky game app that features charming little beetles that must be paired with their similarly colored friends. This app was created by Neaul Solutions and is currently available through the iTunes store for $0.99. Shy Beetles features 48 different levels, each designed with unique beetle-pairing challenges.

Shy Beetles is made up of many different levels of challenges, but the purpose of each level is the same: Make the beetles that match run into each other while simultaneously preventing the beetles that don’t match from ever colliding. Since every beetle on the screen is constantly running once each level is started, this simple goal can become relatively difficult to achieve at times, depending on the level of the challenge. However, outside of pairing up beetles, Shy Beetles’ seems to lack any other real features or purposes; for example, since no login is required, there does not appear to be a way to track high scores or to conveniently compete against friends.

Appearance and Layout:

While detailed instructions are not really provided for how to play this game, Shy Beetles really is a fairly self-explanatory app. Holding down on the beetles and tapping the screen around them provides the beetles with the direction that they will run, and the goal of each challenge is to only make the matching beetles run into each other while avoiding any differently colored bugs. While the graphics of this app are certainly not overly detailed, they are definitely adequate and of an appropriate level of detail for a fun, simple iPhone app game. The screens in Shy Beetles are best viewed when the iPhone is held horizontally, however, as the layout of each screen seems to be best designed for this viewing.

Shy Beetles is currently sold for $0.99 through the iTunes store. While this price is certainly not exorbitant, the features of Shy Beetles are also fairly limited; many “free” iPhone games with similar plots to Shy Beetles are already available, so purchasing Shy Beetles may not seem worthwhile to some consumers. At the same time, however, for those who thrive on quirky, fun puzzle games that progress at steady clips, Shy Beetles will seem to be well worth its relatively minimal price tag.

Shy Beetles iPhone app requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. The iPhone app reviews rating:
