3volution: Written and Video iPhone App Review

If you’re one of our more dedicated readers, then you’re likely aware of the fact that we’re rather exceptionally fond of a good arcade game for either the iPad or the iPhone. We also like games that give us a bit of frustration, ultimately leading to some wicked (and much earned satisfaction). If you’re of the same mold, then may we present to you 3volution by developer ZAKI. The app serves up both in spades, in addition to having quite a few other perks. And if you’re looking for our full review, you’ll find it below!

Concept and Gameplay

It’s somewhat difficult to pin a core idea to the game that is evolution, but if we had to we’d say it looks something like this: You’ll be asked to knock about a bunch of small, rotund aliens within a puzzle. The idea is to achieve a set number and type of quests with each volley, completing the level and allowing you to move onto the next. It’s also got a sports twist, though, as you’re only allowed certain moves that maintain the game’s rules. For instance, you must cross the line created by the other two, non-useful critters. If you fail to do so, you’ll lose a life. In this way—combined with the arcade style quests—3volution is quite the hark back to the original days of iPhone gaming.

That being said, it’s one heck of a lot zanier, and quite a bit more of an handful than anything we’re used to: And we like it. The gameplay is fresh, exciting, and rejuvenating. It’s also complex, rich and engaging, which means you’ll easily spend hours upon hours playing it. All in all, it’s a near perfect mix of original concept, classic presentation, and unique execution.

After completing all stages players unlock Freeplay mode, where there are no more quests, only hunt for gazillion of points and random encounters with all of primordial soup residents – make sure you check this out, it’s the most important feature of the game!

Design and Graphics

Also, did we mention the game looks fantastic? If we didn’t, then we really should have. The neon-studded graphics, wealth of powerups, and custom levels all shine with an extreme amount of polish. In fact, we haven’t seen a better looking title in quite a while. It’s a got a cartoony feel and approach, but don’t let that fool you: 3volution is a wickedly difficult game that requires a lot of precise timing and coordination. We enjoyed this quite a lot, and when combined with the killer art style, it generally left us with a lot to love.

Overall Value

3volution is outside of that golden one dollar price range that we’re always talking about. However, we’re not going to complain about it this time around. The reason is simple: 3volution is worth every penny. It’s a brilliant new arcade game, and if you’re into iPhone gaming at all, we strongly suggest you give it a good, hard looking over. It’s an easy recommendation, and we hope an even easier sell.

3volution for iPhone3volution requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.

3volution for iPhone 5 is already on it’s way and will feature some updated graphics and a few surprises.

Absolutely stunning game! The best arcade game in months, maybe years. But you have to unlock freeplay first (complete the given quests and progress through stages), then the fun begins. I’ve seen some Game Center records, craaazy, people already getting over 100 billion of points.
