The Iron Mouse: Written iPhone App Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we feel like we’ve mentioned a few times our love for all things arcade, physics-based, and unique. As such, we’re quite tickled to introduce you today to The Iron Mouse by developer Emobi Games. The app presents the user with a unique game concept, some wicked puzzles, and more than enough content to keep things entertaining. If you’re hunting for a full review, too, you’ll find it just beyond the break below. So without further ado, let’s get cracking!
Concept and Gameplay
The idea behind the gameplay of The Iron Mouse goes something like this: You play as a gravity-enabled mouse made from—presumably—iron. This means you get to leap about, attaching yourself magnetically to the platforms and obstacles that make up the levels. Along the way, you’ll need to collect three pieces of cheese per level. Doing so will earn you at least a star, though Angry Birds style, completing the puzzles more efficiently will garner you an higher rating.
You’ll also need to use various weapons and power ups to successfully navigate the game’s added problems. These include cats, extra long jumps, electric shock beams, and much more. All in all, you’ll really need to work on your precision and jump timing to blast through The Iron Mouse. To be honest, we had quite a bit of difficulty getting to this point—more on that in a second, though. But no matter how you slice it, The Iron Mouse is engaging, unique, and chock full of fun gameplay to work through. Oh, and did we mention that it’s also wicked fun?
Graphics and Design
We do have one small complaint with The Iron Mouse, however: The physics engine is a bit . . . well, wonky. We’re not saying it’s bad, but rather that it’s simply hard to get used to. We found ourselves well into the game and still struggling to time our jumps in a way that we’d land where we wanted to go. In other words, the physics engine included here just doesn’t quite match up with the way we’d expect it to behave. However, this could easily be ironed out in future updates, and we sincerely hope that it is: The graphics and art style of The Iron Mouse are absolutely fantastic, and deserve better gameplay than this.
All of that being said, it’s quite hard not to argue with the value of The Iron Mouse. It will cost you only a dollar in the App Store, and for the amount of entertainment that it’s offering, that’s really quite a bargain. So all in all, if you’re looking for a new physics-based action puzzler to play through, we can’t help but recommend the cheesy fun of The Iron Mouse.
The Iron Mouse requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
