sMoods: Written and Video iPhone App Review
One of the genres we tend to see the most of here at the iPhone App Review doesn’t involve any sort of flying bird or complex physics puzzle. It doesn’t even really have to do with money management or healthy lifestyles. Instead, it tends to be the next social media idea. These run the gamut from being incredible to downright thiefy. However, today’s look at the field is much more on the former side. Yes, ladies and gents, sMoods by developer MoodMe is a fine example of how to go about creating a new social platform. Want to know why? Then scroll on down below the break for our full review!
Concept and Functionality
As stated, sMoods is a new social platform that wants to draw your attention to its conversational goods. However, this isn’t some crumby Twitter hack or Facebook rip-off. No, sMoods offers up an wholly unique concept that’s somewhere between MySpace and FourSquare.
Essentially, the app allows you to tell your friends what kind of mood you’re in. This doesn’t mean “sad” or “happy,” but rather something more like “I’m in the mood to go see a movie!” You can login to your account, list an activity that you’d like to pursue, specify some contacts (sMoods buddies or no) to hit-up, and then just let the whole thing sit there. It’s quick, efficient, and unbelievably useful—Yes, we were caught by surprise, too. You can leave a time statue on your mood, which means if your friends don’t happen to get back in touch with you quickly, your status will disappear. All in all, it’s a unique twist, and with variety of moods and categories to choose from, you’re not without your choice of options, either.
Design and Interface
In fact, our only real complaint with the app comes in the form of its own design. Now, it’s not the ugliest app we’ve ever seen. But then again, it does have some rough edges. For instance, the icons for the moods could likely be improved a lot, as could the tabbed navigational controls in general. They’re quick enough at finding what you need, but in terms of aesthetics, it’s no FourSquare. We’d also like to attach our Facebook accounts to the app, rather than needing to signup for a proprietary account.
Still, at the end of the day, sMoods is a free app that shows one heck of a lot of promise. It’s got a unique platform to stand on, and as time rolls forward, we can only assume the app’s design will improve. As it gains followers and strengthens its weaknesses, we’d suggest you keep an eye out for sMoods. This one actually has something to prove, and we’ll be damned if it just doesn’t do it!
sMoods requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
