Peek!: Written iPhone App Review
Here at the iPhone App Review we’ve been seeing an awful lot of applications that fall within the wide and glorious bubble left behind by apps like Draw Something and Words With Friends. These are apps that perfectly combine the best social aspects of playing a game on your iPhone with genuinely nifty gameplay concepts. Today’s full review is of Peek! by developer Piranha Byte, an app that mimics this formula to great success. Best of all, it’s fun, too! For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break. Starting with:
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, Peek! comes from a similar mold to the one that produced the best-selling Draw Something. Essentially, players take turns playing the game from their iPhones. In this way, one user can add their turn, then wait until a later point to reply. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to chat up your opponent, make some friends, and play some wicked turns.
Peek! doesn’t let you spell out words, though. Instead, it allows you to slowly figure out a word based on a picture clue and a set of tiles. The doors to creativity have been flung open, as each player can snap a pic, attach a small word or phrase, and then tile the photo up. The end result is a peek at an idea that must be guessed correctly to beat the level. The player presented with the picture can use “peeks” to peel back some of the tiles, but at the end of the day, the player must still figure out which word out of a thousand the picture is worth. It’s a great gameplay idea, and it works like a charm when a mobile camera like the iPhone is involved.
Graphics and Interface
The app happens to look pretty great, too. And that’s not just us being passe, we truly mean it: So many of the apps we see in this genre present us with amateurish or lacking interfaces. Meanwhile, Peek! is offering a polished experience that quickly directs the user about its features. The gameplay itself is smooth and inviting, as well as simple enough that a child could play. Furthermore, even the color scheme is on-par or bette than the other leading five hundred pound gorillas. All in all, we find it quite hard to complain about the outfit Peek! is wearing.
Naturally, we find it even harder to complain about the price Peek! is going for. With absolutely no money upfront you can begin enjoying everything Peek! has to offer, including Facebook integration that has you pitting your skills against your friends. All in all, it’s a smooth game, a wicked concept, a beautiful presentation, and a great value. For the dedicated iPhone gamer out there, do we really need to say more?
Peek! requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
