The folks at Spoonjuice have outdone themselves. The latest in their Night Stand app line is Night Stand HD 2, and this, my friends, is one serious alarm app.

Like any good clock and alarm app, Night Stand 2 allows you to tell time and set alarms. Funny how that works, huh? But that’s where the similarities between Night Stand 2 and other clock apps stop. The Night Stand 2 app makes waking up a game, literally. This app connects to Game Center, where it logs your points and achievements. Waking up before 9 a.m. earns you some big ones, and you can use those points to unlock some awesome and beautiful clock graphics.

Or, if you’re a bit impatient, the app allows you to unlock one extra clock skin for free after you subscribe to the Spoonjuice Newsletter. I was a bit disappointed when doing this didn’t unlock a skin for me, but I assume that’s just a pre-launch issue that will be quickly resolved (update: this have been fixed by the developer).

When an alarm goes off in “Aggressive Alarm” mode it does a few things. One, it makes the subsequent snoozes shorter and your alarm tone louder. It also makes you play a cognitive game after hitting snooze five times. Waking up gets a whole lot easier when you’re playing to stop the sound.

The Night Stand 2 app also features weather reports, a stopwatch and can play sleep music if you so desire. This is one sweet alarm clock app. Want to make it even better, Spoonjuice? Why not add some binaural beats or sound machine features? How about an option to use music for your alarm or to create custom alarm tones? Just a few suggestions.

Layout & Design:

One things for sure: Night Stand 2 is a beautiful app. The standard clock interface has a couple of color options, but the unlockable clock skins are where the app truly shines. Night Stand 2 HD features all of the same designs as the original plus a cool new Polar design.

This revamp also features retina display customization for the iPhone and iPad, so you really get a stellar look on all screens.

My only suggestion is that the devs consider adding even more cool clock designs. This app has some serious staying power already, folks, so you’re gonna want to check it out pronto.

Overall Value:

After downloading the free Night Stand HD 2 app, you can also choose to purchase the unlockable clock faces. After a promotional period, this app will cost $1.99, but get it now during the intro period free of charge. Personally, I love the fact that you can play this app like a game to earn points and unlock clocks that way. It takes the app from boring to extraordinary, and hitting snooze suddenly becomes a game. How cool is that?

Like the other incarnations of this app, you are going to be putting down a little green to get it started, but it is so worth it. Well done, Spoonjuice. Well done.

    Hi there!

A small correction, if you don’t mind ? you can use music as alarm sound, just tap “iPod Library” on Sounds screen, when you’re customising your alarm. Screenshot:

Hope this helps. And thanks for the great review!
