Let’s Go Dutch!: Written iPhone App Review
If you’re like me, you love nothing more than spending a weekend away with friends. Whether it’s visiting new places, checking out new restaurants, or embarking on an awesome camping trip, the question of who is paying for what is bound to come up.
Concept and Functionality:
Let’s Go Dutch! is a sleek and simple app which sticks to serving its purpose. It’s not filled with fancy animations for complicated menus. Everything is very straightforward and information is easy to access, which means it’ll take almost no time to learn how to navigate the app.
Four separate windows help to keep information organized. “Activities” shows a simple list of trips you’re keeping track of. Though it’s unlikely that you’ll forget where you are, a helpful asterisk symbol shows which trip is currently your default. This is also where you can add or remove group members even if you’ve already tracked expenses for the trip.
“Spending” is where you keep track of expenses and who paid for what. Adding a new expense is very simple, and you have the option to include as much or as little information as you want. All you have to do is enter a short description of the expense, the date of it, the total amount, and the people who are sharing the expense.
“Balances” is a nice visual depiction of how much money everyone owes. This is great for people who are just looking for a quick idea as to who is spending the most or least amount of money on a trip.
Lastly, “Go Dutch!” tells you exactly how much money each person owes someone else. This could be considered the official bill amongst friends.
I believe the app’s strongest feature is the ability to select which group members are responsible for each expense. Doing this keeps you from paying for something you had nothing to do with, which can save a ton of hassle amongst friends.
Another great feature is the option to add e-mail addresses so you can keep in touch with group members and easily show them how much they owe. I was a little nervous when I first saw this because I thought the app might force the user to provide an e-mail address in order to add a group member (which eliminates Hypothetical Uncle Bob, who doesn’t even own a computer). Thankfully this isn’t the case.
The other wonderful thing about Let’s Go Dutch! is that you don’t have to plan a huge vacation in order for the app to be of use. You can also use it if you’re going out on the town for a friend’s birthday party.
The app’s simple and straightforward approach to keeping track of expenses is what earned it a five-star rating. I definitely recommend Let’s Go Dutch! if you’re a travel junkie or if you like to go out with large groups of friends. However, if the only expense you have to worry about sharing is the tip for Sunday brunch, it’s probably best to skip this app.
Let’s Go Dutch! is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 5.1 or later.
