i to eye: Written iPhone App Review

i to eye, developed by Spiro Creative, is a fun and educational twist on augmented reality. Like many people, I’ve definitely wondered what it would be like to see the world through new eyes. i to eye has blended biological studies with advanced technology to bring a whole new augmented reality app to the table.

My skepticism made it difficult to look past the thought that this might just be another gimmicky camera app, and it wasn’t until I had the chance to play around with it that I realized the developer wasn’t kidding around.

Concept and Functionality:

I was a bit thrown off by the icon because I thought it blended faces together. It wasn’t until I actually opened the app that I realized it gives you the opportunity to look at the world through the eyes of different creatures. What a cool concept!

The app is pretty basic as far as design and sacrifices flashy graphics for practicality. The vision selection screen has animated critter icons, but that’s about it. The camera screen, however, is where the app shines with regards to features.

Features:

From birds to infants, there are quite a few lens choices:

  • Songbirds
  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Baby (newborn, 3 months, 6 months)

Aside from the fact that i to eye allows you to see the world in a new way, you also have the ability to take photos within the app.  You can also set a favorite lens for easy access.

The only thing that disappoints me about i to eye is how shallow and basic it seems to be.  I feel it should have a few more key features and lenses for the price.  Hopefully future updates will include new animals.

Another feature that definitely wouldn’t hurt is the ability to record video through the app.  This would open up a whole new world of options for folks who enjoy creating videos on their phone.

Value:

If you’re a fan of augmented reality apps, i to eye is perfect for you. My only issue is the price tag. I believe the app has room for improvement and new features.  I definitely suggest checking out the demo video on the app’s website to see if i to eye is right for you before taking the plunge.

i to eye is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
