Ginger Run: iPhone
Here lately we’ve been seeing a whole load of Olympics inspired applications: Some of them quite good, and others really quite horrible. However, we’re quite thankful to be introducing you to Ginger Run (Oleg Kapitonov) as the app is most certainly in the latter category. It arrived at our desk with a smooth new concept, a wicked control scheme, and more than enough entertainment value to earn the full review you’ll find below. So without further ado, let’s get cracking at this excellent bakery fueled title for the iPhone!
Concept and Gameplay
The idea behind Ginger Run is fabulously inventive, though really quite simple. You play as a gingerbread man on the run against his competitors. You must best them in a foot race to earn bonuses, an higher score, and other assorted items that allow you to keep conquering. To do this, you’ll need to manage the game’s similarly creative control scheme. Tap the right side once to move his right foot. Tap the left and that one swings forward. Alternate in this pattern more rapidly, and the little guy will spring ahead. Lastly, you can swing upward with a spare finger to have him hurtling hurdles like a champ.
Along the way you’ll even get to collect various powerups which can be used to boost your gameplay experience. Did we mention that you’ll be overtaking weaklings, too? It’s an exhilarating experience, and all of this is combined with a scoring system that’s . . . well, addictive. It’s arcade gaming at its finest and we absolutely cannot recommend Ginger Run enough based on its gameplay alone. This one is entertaining, simplistic and above all fun.
Graphics and Design
Best of all, Ginger Run looks pretty fantastic on the iPhone, too. It’s got a unique, vector-esque style of animation and art that we liked a lot. We also enjoyed the level design, which makes clever use of kitchen counter space to layout the objects you’ll need to find and use to win. We were also quite fond of the sheer number and quality of items that one can accrue throughout the game. You’ll get a wide amount of variety here. So what we’re saying is this: Ginger Run may take only seconds to learn, and it may look rather simple, but underneath all of that is a wealth of complexity and entertainment.
As a free title in the App Store, Ginger Run is also a tremendous value. It comes with a lot of bang for your buck, which means you’ll not need to even look at the in-app purchases for some time to come. All in all, Ginger Run offers a lot of fun and games for not a lot of money up front, making it a steal for any arcade game fanatic. Go ahead and download it: The quirky title comes recommended.
Ginger Run requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
