First Day at School: Written and Video iPad App Review
Have you been looking for yet another children’s book to read to your youngin’s before they go to sleep at night? Want that experience to come from your iPad? If so, then you’re in luck! We’ve got yet another suggestion within the genre, and it arrives just in time for the fresh school season. It’s called First Day at School by developer Beemates Media. It offers a unique story with loads of charm, quality graphics, and even regional support for auto-narration. All in all, it’s a great children’s eBook on the iPad, and you’ll find our full review of the app below!
Concept and Functionality
At its core, First Day at School doesn’t tend to stray all that far from the now traditional eBook formula for the iPad. It presents the child with pages of text, which can either be read to them via a narrator’s voice, or read out loud by you or the child. In-between, the app supplies the user with loads of animations and pictures to poke and prod. This has always been our favorite part of the genre, as nowhere else but the iPad, can a curious reader have the chance to poke the main character, watch them react, and then continue on to alter the rest of the books’ environment.
All of this has been maintained here, and we have to admit, the story isn’t half-bad either. It tells the tale of a certain Bee-Brave (we see what you did there) as he heads off to his first day of school. The young reader will follow his exploits as he learns to be courageous, and accepts his place in school. This story, combined with the various reading modes, really does make the app shine.
Graphics and Artwork
In our eyes, First Day at School is also a pristine example of what can be done within the realm of art on the iPad. We had a few design complaints with the text box at the bottom (it just doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the app) but the actual artwork is stupendous! The animations are smooth, the playback is flawless, and the characters are warm and inviting. All in all, we think First Day at School is positively brimming with professional effort, and the end result displays this.
Considering First Day at School will also only cost you $2.99 in the App Store, we can’t help but call it a bargain, as well. The app is easily a fifth of what it would cost to buy your child an hardback traditional print book, making it an inventive step forward with a fiscally-minded bonus. In other words, this app is a great new read for children of all ages, and if you’ve been waiting for our next recommendation, this is it.
First Day at School requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
