Boom the Rock: Written iPhone App Review
We’ve mentioned this before, but here at the iPhone App Review, we’re really quite sold on the concept of iPhone arcade games. There’s just something about an app that test our mettle and has us obsessing for days that really gets our motors revving. With this in mind, may we kindly introduce you today to Boom the Rock, by developer Hooligans Entertainment. The app presents us with a brand new arcade concept, one that we’re quite fond of. It’s not yet a perfect package, but if you’d like to hear why Boom the Rock needs to be in your lineup, you need only to slide on down below the break.
Concept and Germinally
The basic story behind Boom the Rock goes something like this: You are a rocket controlling scientist who has been asked to save the mother planet. To do this you’ll need to lay out a whole bunch of bezier curves in space, lining things up so that your shots perfectly miss satellites, asteroids, astronauts, and a wealth of other important objects. Eventually, though, the projectile hits the big bloody meteor that’s going to destroy the world, and you’ve beat the level.
If you could’t guess by now, the game is more or less centered around the concept of timing. You’ll need to fire your shots at precisely the right moment to get anywhere. Likewise, you’ll also need to draw your lines perfectly, that way the rocket misses all the required components. Do this well enough, and you’ll receive an higher score rating: Hence the arcade OCD moments where we spent forever attempting to refine our physics. All in all, it’s a truly stellar idea, and one that we enjoyed immensely.
Graphics and Design
In fact, our only real complaint comes within the app’s design. The graphics themselves are great, and we have very few comments there. In fact, we rather liked the pixelated art style of the game. However, we weren’t fans of the rather amateurish, incessant talking in the background by your commander. We love the funny, rather silly atmosphere this creates, but it’s just irritating after a while. This, combined with the wealth of other design facets, sometimes makes the game feel much too busy. But then again, those are aesthetic complaints.
And who can argue with the value that Boom the Rock is? For nothing upfront, you have the option to play through quite a bit of the app’s gameplay. After that, you need only to fork up a dollar to enjoy the rest of the content. This makes the app a tremendous value, especially for arcade gaming fans on the iPhone. All in all, Boom the Rock easily comes recommended for its unique gameplay and hilarious textures.
Boom the Rock requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
