Blendamaze: Written iPhone App Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we like any sort of application that’s going to test our mettle; especially if it involves some sort of menial task. As such, we’ve always been fond of those old wooden maze ripoff titles. Add to this our love for graphic design, and what you end up with is Blendamaze by developer BorderLeap. It’s a unique hybrid of skill, strategy and color matching, the end result of which is wicked fun—and quite the bargain, too! For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
Here’s the essential concept behind Blendamaze: You’re charged with rolling a marble originating from a variety of start points about a maze. The object is to dip the marble in several paint wells, mixing the colors until they’re a certain hue. Match this hue to the color of the end point, and you’ve landed your self a successful run. Often times this means rolling the marble through several wells to get the specific shade. This also often means you’ll be running about the maze several times in order to achieve the right tint. Miss the right well and land in the wrong one, and you’ll have to get to painting all over again.
This sounds difficult because, to be honest, it is: That being said, it’s the sort of difficult that has you begging for more. We enjoyed it immensely, and though we’re already suckers for puzzle games, we still found the concept enthralling. The simple tilt-to-play mechanic is also easy enough for a monkey to learn, but yet complex enough to sustain just about as much richness as you can stand. Overall, Blendamaze is a brilliant idea wrapped in solid execution.
Graphics and Design
Best of all, Blendamaze looks rather smashing on the iPhone, too. The graphics are very well done, but more importantly, the color engine involved is spectacular. The specificity in hues pleases the designers in us to no end, so much so that we often just wanted to giggle at the screen. Granted, we’re a bit more into the color system than most people, but even so, it’s a solid effort. Furthermore, the levels have been cleverly laid out to provide just the right amount of challenge. You’ll need to think about the maze just as much as you think about the colors, which is ace in our book.
Lastly, Blendamaze is a solid bargain, costing only $0.99 in the App Store. With a multitude of levels, each of which can be replayed to garner better results, we imagine you’d find it hard not to get a lot out of the app. Overall, it’s a tremendous title with a great premise and an even better value. At the end of the day, that makes it an easy recommendation from us.
Blendamaze requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
