ArtStudio for iPad: Written iPad App Review
Calling all you doodlers, you sketchers, creators, graphics design majors and, really, anybody who ever fancied themselves even the slightest bit of an artist. There’s a revamped app called ArtStudio for iPad that’s going to change how you create for good. This slick title comes to us courtesy of the smarty pants developers at Lucky Clan. Odds are, you’re going to really love this app. Read the rest of our iPad app review to find out why.
Features. ArtStudio for iPad has ‘em. I’d run out of space in this moderate-length app review if I tried to name them all. Let me give you a taste. There are 15 main input tools for this app, over 450 types of brushes alone, 150 system fonts (and you can import your own if you’d like), gridlines, symmetrics, shapes, tons of colors, filters, layers, opacity controls, and don’t get me started on the app’s ability to let you customize just about everything.
ArtStudio is basically a slightly less advanced Photoshop style app that turns your iPad into a lean, mean, art making machine. All you have to do is glance at the app’s online gallery to see that this isn’t just a doodler for kids, or a coloring app. It’s something special, where the endless choices of brushes, parameters, filters and editing options are just the beginning. Where it goes is up to you.
Artists will love Art Studio, because it finally gives the iPad the teeth it needs to be a true creative outlet. Wanna be artists (like me!) will find hours of enjoyment and fun in this app. And, if you want to improve your skills, there’s even a few built in tutorials to get you started.
Sharing? No problem. Exporting images, saving them, sharing them, it’s all easily accomplished with ArtStudio. I was dumbfoundedly attempting to think of a feature I’d like this app to have that it didn’t already, and all I came up with was photo capture. And that might be tucked in there somewhere yet.
Layout & Design:
The simple grace of the ArtStudio app belies its humble beginnings as an app by artists for artists. Tap to undo, tap to redo. Or, go toolbar free with a touch to give yourself access to every inch of the iPad’s considerable screen.
Frankly, I found using ArtStudio an awesome experience, even if it was slightly intimidating. There are a lot of features and options here (in case you couldn’t tell…) and sometimes I was at a bit of a loss as to what they do. A built in-app tutorial or help function would be a welcome addition (the app currently takes you to a website for assistance), but it’s quite fun to just push buttons and play, which I highly suggest doing.
For $4.99, I defy anyone to produce a more thorough, well made, slam dunk of a drawing app. The folks at Lucky Clan know what they’re about with this latest incarnation of ArtStudio, and I’m a fan. Get the app, creative-types. You owe it to yourself to see what you can make today.
ArtStudio for iPad iPhone app requires iOS 4.1 or later and is compatible with iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
