Wannabat Plus: iPhone App Written Review
We don’t get to say this very often, so we’re going to do it with a particular bit of relish: Wannabat Plus by developer VituSoft offers a completely new game mechanic, one that arrives with a tone of online multiplayer potential and more than enough slugger-based action to hold our interest. In fact, this combined with the game’s killer graphics set means the entire package is easily worth the two bucks that it will cost you. And if that gets your curiosity piqued, you need only to slide on down below the break to see what else we have to say about the app!
Concept and Gameplay
Do you like Baseball? Good, because you’re going to need to know the rules for the sport, but after that, you’ll pretty much need to throw out everything else that you know. Why is that? Because Wannabat Plus has reinvented the wheel here with something they’ve taken to calling “Street Baseball.” The formula looks more or less like this:
You’ll battle online opponents or computer AI one-on-one by taking turns pitching and catching. One player tries to lob the ball in such a way that it cannot be hit, while the other player seeks to smack it out of the park. The distance for each hit corresponds to a number of bases run. This keeps up until runs are scored or until outs are called. Now, the real fun in Wannabat Plus is not to be found in the rules: It’s actually in the brilliant controls. The pitching and swinging mechanics both require pitch-perfect precision and an immense amount of strategy. It’s this combination and this setup that makes the app more endearing, and to be honest, it’s really quite addictive.
Graphics and Design
Furthermore, the app itself looks incredibly slick, especially on the Retina display. The graphics are crisp and sporty, and they even reminded us a bit of the old cell-shaded console titles we used to play around with a few years back. The character design is solid, and as mentioned, the control scheme is truly top-notch. There’s quite a steep learning curve involved, though, and to competently play against online opponents, you are going to need to work to perfect your strategy. However, we hardly saw this is a downside, though, as the gameplay is so flippin’ good!
At the end of the day, Wannabat Plus is a truly solid value for the price tag. Two bucks is not a lot to ask for an app that’s this good, and if you ask us, you’ll hardly find a better two dollar purchase this week. If the concept sounds fun, and the graphics have hooked your interest, go ahead and download this recommended sports arcade game for the iPhone and iPad.
Wannabat Plus requires iOS 5.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
