VPHO: Written iPhone App Review
When it comes to calling over data, rather than using your cellular network, there really aren’t many options available on the iPhone. In fact, aside from the big names like Skype, there just aren’t many solid numbers to side with. Thankfully, though there’s now an alternative: It’s called VPHO, and it’s by the developer IPCOM Solutions. It offers a dynamic and sustainable way to communicate with all of your contacts over-the-network and on your iPhone. For a deeper cut, you need only to scroll on down below the break for our full review!
Concept and Functionality
The idea behind VPHO is unbelievably simple, and we honestly can’t get enough of it. It works like this: The app automatically ties directly into the contact list on your phone, looking for things like phone numbers, email addresses, etc. Once all of this has been loaded, you can immediately begin to start pegging your favorite contacts.
Everything is routed through the app itself, which means that everything done in-app is done over the wireless network you’re attached to. In this way, you can send text messages, place voice calls, do video conferencing (with up to three people, no less) and much more without running up your regular phone bill. In fact, if you’re like us and have a Sprint connection with unlimited data, you’re essentially golden. Best of all, the app is completely cross-platform, which means you can contact other VPHO users for free regardless of what device they are on or what network. This even extends to international calls, as everything is routed through VPHO and is sans charge. Need we say more here?
Design and Interface
The truly incredible thing is just how good the interface looks. We rarely see this level of polish within any application: The menus are responsive, the design is intuitive, and the animations are crisper than too-burnt toast. In fact, we’d be willing to say that the aesthetics presented here in VPHO are on-par or above those of the standard iOS counterparts. The dialing and video conferencing especially are spot-on for the caliber that we’d expect from Apple themselves. All in all, VPHO is a truly gorgeous looking application, which goes a long way toward inspiring confidence in its abilities to connect you to your mates.
At the end of the day, VPHO is a great way to save a little money on your monthly phone bill. It’s efficient, it takes very little effort to setup, and it runs like a champ with one of the best interfaces we’ve ever seen. Like Skype, you will need others to use the service, which knocks the value just a bit. However, aside from this you’ll get a lot of bang for not a lot of buck, which makes VPHO an undeniable value (and an high star earner) in our eyes.
VPHO requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
