SurfSpotting: Written iPhone App Review
Are you a die-hard surfer or an interested beginner? Looking for a new surfing spot? Then you might want to check out the SurfSpotting app from developer LOMAH Studios Pty Ltd.. It is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad, and runs on iOS 5.0 or later.
When the user first loads SurfSpotting they are prompted with allowing the app to pinpoint the user’s specific location. They will need to have internet access in order for the app to properly function. The user can view surfing hotspots near where they live or locate places wherever they travel to and from. The main menu displays four separate functions: “Map”, “Add Spot”, “Search”, and “Favorites”. The map allows the user to view spots geographically, and also via satellite and hybrid mode. The “Add Spot” function allows the user to bookmark their favorite surfing spot and even add “secret” favorite spots. The “Search” function enables the user to search for locations around their vicinity, or by name, or by global regions. The “Favorites” function lets the user document their coveted surfing spots.
This app allows the user to have access to view 1,250 surfing locations with their exact GPS locations. Not only does the app offer locations pinpoints, but also other helpful information such as wind, swell, and wave directions, and also current surf conditions.
Appearance and Layout:
The overall appearance of SurfSpotting is average. There isn’t anything special or unique about its layout or design. It is made for a specific purpose and it serves that purpose. Would it have been more appealing if it contained special graphics and eye-catching imagery? Of course it would. The app could sport a bit more detail and gain a wider audience by doing so.
On the other hand, the layout of the app is easy to navigate and functions are simple to figure out. However, during app navigation, switching back and forth between functions seemed to cause a minor delay between switches, but not enough to hinder anything.
For SurfSpotting being offered for $2.99 is a so-so deal. The app only caters to a specific group of people with an interest in surfing. Most likely those who are avid surfers are already familiar with the local surf spots and do not require any additional information sources other than word of mouth or frequenting neighboring spots.
Surfspotting iPhone app requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review. The iPhone app reviews rating: [Rating: 3/5]
