Snake Returns Premium: iPhone App Written Review
Do you like the old arcade game Snake? If so (or if you’ve never heard of it at all) then you might aught to check out Snake Returns Premium by developer mobivention. Snake Returns Premium revitalizes the old concept, bringing along new graphics, two distinct game modes, a wealth of control methods, and more than enough neon to hold our interest. And if that’s got your curiosity piqued, you need only to slide on down below the break to view our entire review of the app! Starting with:
Concept and Gameplay
If you could’t guess from the name of the app, Snake Returns Premium is a remake of the classic arcade title Snake. For those not familiar with that concept, it goes something like this: You play as a snake who trolls about the level eating eggs and avoiding mines. As you collect more delectables, your tail grows by one-notch per egg. You’ll need to collect quite a lot of eggs to get an high score, which means sooner rather than later you’ll be trying hard to avoid that caboose you’ve got trailing behind you. It’s a lot of fun, and we liked the remake presented here in Snake Returns Premium.
However, we do wish more had been done to improve the concept. Sure, this is a pretty traditional take on the old arcade property, but we’ve played Snake before. We enjoyed the fact that the gameplay is classic, but with so many adaptations coming before Snake Returns Premium, we would have liked a bit more innovation. Still, we appreciated the fact that the game comes with two unique game modes (a survival mode as well as a more level-based mode). These are brilliant additions, but on the whole, we were expecting a bit more power under the bonnet.
Graphics and Design
However, where Snake Returns Premium truly exceeds is in the realm of graphics and design. Snake Returns Premium offers some of the best skinning we have ever seen for a Snake clone, and furthermore, the pacing is excellent. The speed of the snake is pitch-perfect, as are the controls. Of which, you’ll get three options: There’s swipe, tilt and stab to move, which are all excellent in our opinion. And lastly, the animations are simply stunning. All in all, from a purely aesthetically standpoint Snake Returns Premium is a great remake of a classic title.
At the end of the day, $2.99 maybe slightly too high a price to pay for Snake Returns Premium, but we still feel as if we should recommend it—especially to fans of the series. If you really enjoy Snake, and want to play it in stunning glory on your Retina display, there’s no better option available on the market. Snake Returns Premium is still a bargain, and with all due luck, future updates will bring along even more innovation.
Snake Returns requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
