Puzzle Poker: Written iPhone App Review
When it comes to cards, you can’t get much more classic than poker. Now there’s an app that takes poker, and turns it on its head. It’s called Puzzle Poker, and I can’t get enough of this smart app from Quantum Clockwork.
The Puzzle Poker iPhone app takes guiding principles of poker, and its hand values, and turns it into a game there’s more like solitaire. You’re presented with a game board of cards, and it’s your job to arrange them into the highest point value hands possible, both horizontally and vertically. It’s like a big dirty game of poker Sudoku. And it’s actually a lot of fun.
There is a free trial version of Puzzle Poker you can download and play, but that free version only gives you two solitary game boards, and that’s just the beginning with this app. The real fun comes when you unlock the full featured version of the app for $.99 and start playing Puzzle Poker multiplayer. Then it’s a race against your opponents to see who can rack up the highest poker score in the quickest amount of time. I do wish the free version at least showed you one of those multiplayer boards. But que sera.
Puzzle Poker also interfaces with Game Center for unlockable achievements, always a big favorite around here.
Layout & Design:
If green is the color of desire, it’s also the color of money, and that’s what Puzzle Poker is all about. It’s a gold on green motif that reminds me of nothing so much as money. The Puzzle Poker app is also universal, meaning it makes effective use of the iPad’s expansive screen real estate, a big plus in my book.
The game interface is quite easy to understand, and the app even sports a helpful tutorial section and a hand value break down for the uninitiated. It isn’t the most exciting app I’ve ever reviewed, but it does have a certain polish and style that are undeniable.
As I mentioned earlier, it is free to download Puzzle Poker. However, the free version is extremely limited. Frustratingly so. Let’s just call a spade a spade. If you enjoy card games and the theory behind poker, and you’re looking for a new card-based game for your iOS device, you’re going to be spending $.99. Puzzle Poker has a really cool concept, and is broken up effectively into different levels of difficulty so even the most remedial player can get some joy out of it. This is a high quality app that’s worth forking over a little bit of dough to enjoy. Give it a try.
Puzzle Poker iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
