Portfolio Mobile: iPhone App Written Review
Believe it or not, we’re actually quite the suckers for a good stocks application on either the iPad or the iPhone. In fact, we often prefer it to reviewing another Angry Birds clone, or some puzzling app with online multiplayer. Why is this? Because nothing says functionality, grace and efficiency like a portfolio tracker with a mean attitude and a whole lot of features! Today’s example? Portfolio Mobile by developer Bare Reef. The app is a titanically good example of what can be done when a bunch of finance wizards decide to get coding. And for our full review of the app, you need only to scroll on down below the break!
Concept and Functionality
We’re just going to jump right out and say it: Portfolio Mobile isn’t your grandfather’s stocks application. This app comes packed with just about as many features as you could think to ask for, and then about ten times more on top of that. This makes the app the single most feature-rich title we’ve seen yet in the App Store with stocks in mind. Here’s what we mean:
First of all, the app will track stocks, options, money market accounts, and a few others. It also provides global quotes from all the respected organizations. Want automatic conversion between foreign and native currencies? How about industry news delivered via a single tab within the app? Would you like a slice of distribution pie charting, as well? Well saddle up, Soldier, because you’ll be getting all of them! In addition, you can also expect OFX support to allow syncing account information between the app and your broker—a real boon in today’s modern, digital world. And lastly, you’ll get real price alerts to ensure that you don’t miss a steal, and don’t accidentally sit too long on a rotten egg.
Design and Layout
In fact, our only real complaint with the app is the fact that it’s rather bulbous, though not in a bad way. Rather, it will simply take you quite a bit of time to get used to the layout, and to become truly efficient with the tools at hand. There’s a lot of material stored here, and if you’re not making an effort to stay on top of things, you may become quite lost. However, that’s no reason to knock the app’s design, as it still looks fantastic on the iPad’s larger screen real estate!
We’ll spin it to you this way: The app itself costs just under $7, which is an hefty price tag for any app. Additional pro services will cost you even more. Still, even with the dear cost of the app, you’ll get your money’s worth and then some. It’s simply the best, most feature-rich, and most power-packed stocks app we have seen yet. Portfolio Mobile easily earns our recommendation.
Portfolio Mobile requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
