Kill Devils: Written iPhone App Review
We talk a lot about how much we love puzzle games. And thought our affections are certainly true—we wouldn’t lie to you about that—we often can’t decide which we like more: Pure iOS puzzling, or a good old fashioned tower defense game. On the subject of the latter, we’ve got a brand new title with a whole lot of promise ready to show you. It’s called Kill Devils and it’s by developer Sun Ground Company. The app offers a world of defensive gameplay action, and all without any price tag attached at all. And if that’s not enough of a reason to grab it now, then keep on reading down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
Now, you likely think you know how all tower defense games work. And with Kill Devils, you might just be right! The game has you defending your castle against an horde of angry attackers using a single magical cannon atop your gate. You can also make use of four different magical attacks, three elemental and one super-powerful dragon-based. You’ll need to leverage all of these elements and your available resources to beat each wave. Of which, by the way, you’ll be fighting quite a few. In other words, the gameplay itself is a rather traditional castle defense offering, but the sheer amount of content and items that you have to deal with per level spread out to offer quite a lot of jam on a whole lot of toast. All in all, we’re quite impressed with the variety in units, upgrades and attacks the game affords you. It’s a mountain of stuff, and before you know you’ve done it, you’ll have worked your way through half of it.
Design and Graphics
We’re going to say it straight out: Kill Devils takes a lot of inspiration from a certain roleplaying game by a certain large company. We won’t say who—translate the word “Nevada”—but this hardly bothers us. Why so? Because the graphics look great. The whole package is lovely to the umpteenth, and we loved the art style. We’re suckers for the original, which may mean we aren’t put-off by the copying, but it’s still a solid effort. However, we did have some problems with the pacing: The game gives you an easy wave and then immediately follows it with a difficult boss battle. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it is a bit odd, and doesn’t do much to aide the flow of the tittle. Overall though, Kill Devils displays an immense amount of power and potential, as well as polish.
Best of all, the application is completely free in the App Store. Yes, you heard that right! You won’t need to pay a darn thing to enjoy the app and all it offers. If you’d like, you can spend in-game money to purchase upgrades ahead of schedule, but this is hardly a necessity. In other words, it’s free, it comes with a mountain of gameplay, and it looks great. Do we really need to say more?
Kill Devils requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
