Here at the iPhone App Review, we tend to see a whole lot of applications aimed at children. We’re not really complaining about this: In fact, we like to think that we’re now somewhat the Experts on the subject. As such, we’re tickled pink to introduce you today to an app that neither tries to teach your child complex linguistically skills, nor entertain them with a clever narrative. Rather, it replaces all that PBS nonsense with some good old-fashioned painting fun! For our full review of Ellie’s Wings by developer Daniel Sonnenfeld, you need only to slide on down below the break. So without further ado:

Concept and Functionality

As stated, Ellie’s Wings foregoes the typical eBook style method of keeping your children entertained to instead bring us a little something special. The app presents your child with a menagerie of animals, each with their own set of pearly white wings. The idea here is that your child can tap on the wings with a variety of paints, and fill in the white space. In fact, as they paint, everything they add to one wing immediately appears in mirrored fashion on the other wing. This allows for the simple and effective creation of a number of different engaging patterns.

But don’t think we’re done there! The animals can also be adorned with all sorts of shapes and custom animations. Added to this, your child will love the fact that the creatures giggle, wiggle, faint, laugh and play as they’re being painted. In other words, it’s exactly like a coloring book, only with more extras thrown into the pot, and the page itself responds. It’s a nifty concept, and one we wish we had had as children.

Graphics and Design

We have to admit, the app doesn’t look that bad, either! It’s got all the makings of a stellar application for children: You’ve got a smooth and simple interface that keeps all your ducks in an easy row for small fingers. You’ve also got bright colors, cute animations, and a whole lot of rounded corners to make the child feel at ease. And lastly, the painting interface is simple and fun enough that we have no doubt your child will enjoy slinging paint around like a mad person.

Overall Value

At the end of the day, Ellie’s Wings may not be the most educational application for children that we’ve ever seen, but it’s quite arguably the most fun. It offers a lot of exciting features for your kid to enjoy, and it comes wrapped in a package that’s ideal for their age. Furthermore, you’ll have fun playing it alongside your child, which is always a boon for the concerned parent. And with a dollar price tag attached, there’s absolutely no reason not to give it a go.

Ellie's WingsEllie’s Wings requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
