Here at the iPhone App Review, as many of our more dedicated readers will be more than ready to tell you, we’ve got something of a thing for arcade games. In fact, we’d say we’re just about in love with them. All of this just goes to say that we’re head over heels for Aliens Abducted, a brilliant new title within the genre be developers Bilu Games. The app flips the traditional alien abduction story on its head, throws in a quest for knowledge, and then adds an heavy dusting of Earth geography. The end results is a trivia game with an arcade styling that truly shines like none other. And for our full review, you need only to scroll on down below the break!

Concept and Gameplay

The essential idea behind Aliens Abducted goes something like this: Two hapless aliens are kidnapped by another species, and then made to search the universe for wisdom and knowledge. For some reason or other, they decide to go with Earth. Once landed, they’ll take the player around the globe, asking what flag and country goes with each national outline presented on the globe. Don’t think this is a challenge? Then name fifteen counters in Southern Africa, then point to them. Can’t do it? Then you’ve just discovered the value (and the fun) of Aliens Abducted.

However, the game doesn’t just stop there! They also throw in a platforming sub-game that you can play to further explore the escape tale of the two aliens. In addition, you’ll also get a quotes section that offers even more material to plow through. All in all, it’s quite obvious the developers have thought more than a bit about the breadth they want to offer, and the end result is girthy indeed.

Design and Interface

Best of all, the app looks pretty slick, too! It’s got an hand drawn graphics style that we liked quite a bit, as well as a full set of high-definition flags for the geography part. However, we did find the menagerie of content a bit odd. For instance, we liked the trivia, but when paired with a platformer—even if it relates via plot—the whole combination seems a bit rickety. We like a lot of content, but we feel like there must be a better way to tie the app’s various elements together into a more fluid dynamic.

Overall Value

Still, with so much content it’s quite hard to argue against the app’s two dollar value. In fact, we wouldn’t even try. You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck here, and in our eyes, any arcade game that can provide this level of engaging content for two bucks is easily worth a shot. Need a new title to add to your repertoire? Then this one is a straight shooter to shoe-horn into next.

Aliens AbductedAliens Abducted requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
