A Fistful of Penguins: Written iPad App Review
Fans of the family board game, and fans of dice-based games, will love this digital version of the popular A Fistful of Penguins game. It comes to us courtesy of Crooked Smiles, and one thing’s for sure, this game is wicked fun.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with this family favorite, A Fistful of Penguins is a game that combines strategy and the luck of the dice in an animal-filled competition. To be honest, the rules are a little complicated. But this universal app does a great job of walking new players through a helpful tutorial, and giving players familiar with the board game great insight into the workings of this mobile version.
You can play A Fistful of Penguins iPhone app alone or against up to three other players. The game comes with five unique players, each with different strategies, strengths and levels of difficulty. So there’s plenty of variety and tactics to learn, keeping this app interesting for much longer.
As you play, you’ll collect penguin dice, which allow you to add dice and reroll. The other dice sport lions, camels, squirrels, moose and kangaroos. There are rules that govern how many points each is worth, and how they interact. It will probably take you a bit to learn all the rules, but once you have them down, this game is tons of fun and translates quite well to a mobile format. My wish list for updates is pretty small, but I do hope the app expands to be pass-and-play local multiplayer in the near future.
Layout & Design:
Thanks so colorful, family-friendly animal graphics and plenty of smooth play, the user interface and design in A Fistful of Penguins iPhone app are spot on. This game is fun, easy to navigate, and even sports a speedy fast-forward feature in case you don’t want to sit around waiting for other players to take their turns. Could the game itself be more vibrant? Possibly. There’s a lot going on, so the screen space is pretty clogged. But the app is awesomely universal, and plays like a dream on the iPad.
Adding A Fistful of Penguins to your app collection is going to run you $1.99. And that’s complete. I love there aren’t any hidden upgrades, considering this is an app that kids will enjoy as well.
I do have to say I was a bit disappointed by the “buy the original” link on the app’s main page. Again, this is a game that kids will love. Remove outside links to make this game more family-friendly, please!
A Fistful of Penguins iPhone app requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
