Thumb: iPhone App Written Review

Here at the iPhone App Review, we tend to see an awful lot of social media and social networking applications. These are those apps that attempt to creep into the already crowded realm occupied by Facebook and Twitter. Most of the time we catch these apps just as they’re cooking up. However, Thumb by developer Opinionaided is quite a bit different. It’s already gaining quite a following because of its great design, unique concept, and niche holding within the community. If you’d like to know more about what we think of the app, then simply slide on down below the break to get the full scoop! Starting with:

Concept and Functionality

The idea behind Thumb is pleasantly simple: How cool would it be if you had a social media app that focused entirely on other’s opinions, as well as your own? With it, you could easily upload photos and comments asking for advice, or even just searching for some pleasant conversation. Well with Thumb, you can have all of this and more! The app allows you to quickly upload a new post with either a thumbs up or a thumbs down attached. This lets people know if you like or dislike something, portraying your passions. They can then either give their own rating, or add a comment. You can then go in and add a rating to any of those comments, add your own text, or send individuals private messages. It’s wonderfully intuitive, and perhaps the best function of the whole app is its “Ask for an Opinion” model. With this, you upload a photo, attach a question, and then wait for the responses. For instance, if you’re not sure if your haircut looks good, go ahead and ask the Thumb universe! Both your friends and strangers alike can give you feedback, which translates to real opinions really quickly. All in all, it’s a cool concept, and one that has a niche of its very own.

Design and Interface

Typically, the thing that hampers new social media apps the most is their design. We tend to knock these newcomers for their shoddy efforts, but Thumb is pulling out the big guns. The app is delicious on the iPhone, complete with a good looking interface, smooth functionality, and quick control. We had no problems attaching our Facebook account to the app (a tremendous boon) nor adding our photos asking for opinions. All in all, it’s every bit as solid as you’d want it to be and then some, which means the app gets a solid rating in our super-critical design category.

Overall Value

We’ll spin it to you this way: Thumb is free, it’s getting better, and it’s already gaining a following. And with direct integration to Facebook, there’s no additional setup to try it out. So if that doesn’t come across as a recommendation, then we don’t know what else to say! The app is fun, entertaining, and potentially long lasting: Give it a whirl and let us know what you think!

Thumb for iPhoneThumb requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
