QR-Reader: iPhone App Written Review
So what do you do when you need a basic, cheap and effective QR reader for the iPhone and iPad? What do you really do if you need one that also includes the option to scan traditional barcodes as well as generate new QR codes from your device? If you’re in this pickle, and you’re not sure where to go, then straddle up and strap in, because we’re reviewing QR-Reader by developer Power App today. The app is one of the quickest code readers we’ve seen on both the iPhone and iPad, and it comes with a simplicity that will knock your socks off. For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Functionality
Let’s be honest here: QR-Reader is exactly what its name suggest, and that means that it handles QR codes, plain and simple. You point the application’s camera window at a QR code, and it generates either a text preview of what’s contained within, or it points you to the link attached. It’s really that simple. However, as quick and as efficient as that portion of the app is, the rest adds some niceties that we typically don’t see with other QR readers. For instance, you can create new codes within the app using the contextual menu. This is really quite the boon, as we often have to resort to using our desktop to do this during our average work week. Likewise, the app will also track the codes that you scan, allowing you to view your history and any links that you’ve “lost” or forgotten as time progresses. The app will even handle standard barcodes, which can come in handy if you’re at the supermarket with a question in your hand.
Design and Interface
What can we say, QR-Reader is simple enough that it simply doesn’t need much critiquing. It makes use of the standard iOS tabbed navigational controls. They’re classic for a reason, and they’ll enable you to speedily zip around the app’s features without fuss. Aside from this, we haven’t got much to add to the mix. QR-Reader is gorgeous, though perhaps a bit too similar to other readers we’ve seen, and though it’s not the fastest we’ve ever reviewed, it will get the job done.
Our only real complaint with QR-Reader is the fact that it costs a dollar. We complain about this solely because there are so many quality QR readers out there that won’t cost you a dime. With this in mind, the need to actually pay a dollar for something like this is somewhat questionable. Still, you’ll get your money’s worth and then some with the app, as it does everything we’d expect it to and more. So if that sounds like a bargain, go ahead and spring for it!
QR-Reader requires iOS 4.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
