Nerdtris: Video iPhone App Review
Binary. If you know it, you know it. If you don’t, well, odds are you haven’t been indulging your inner math nerd very much. I’ll be the first to admit, when it comes to math, I’m not so fluent. But I just found a killer reason to brush up on my binary. It’s called Nerdtris, and it’s an awesome binary puzzle game from App-Arise GmbH. Think you have the 1337 math skills to get the top score? Read on, math enthusiasts. Read on.
On its own, binary is simply a mathematical way to represent any number with a series of ones and zeros. In the Nerdtris iPhone app, that simple equation is taken to new heights of gaming glory. You are given a regular number, then asked to find the binary equivalent on a crossword-style grid of ones and zeros. You can find answers backwards, forwards, horizontally or vertically.
Now, if you’re a bit rusty and need to brush up on your binary, the game’s got your back. You can press the question mark to see what the binary representation is, or you can skip a number entirely by pressing the fast forward key. But be careful. Nerdtris is a timed game. And every time you use a hint it appears to speed up the timer a bit. Every time you skip a number, a large chunk of your guessing time slips through your fingers.
I found myself wishing the app had a few extra features. While there is a help section, it explains binary in a way my anti-math brain just couldn’t comprehend. I was hoping for a bit of a dumbed down explanation. Also, the game is missing a dedicated pause button, however you can pause the game by pressing the home button. All games should have the option to pause in case you get a phone call, need to use the head or some other real life issue interferes with your obsessive game play, so a dedicated pause button would be preferred.
Nerdtris integrates with Game Center for high score tracking, but there are no accomplishments, which would be an easy feature to add that could make the game even more fun. Just saying.
Layout & Design:
The Nerdtris iPhone app is a vision in basic black and hues of gold. It isn’t horribly complicated, but it is very clear and easy to read, a must for this number-heavy puzzler. Aside from the few user interface issues (such as the missing pause button), I found Nerdtris very easy to play and navigate. One thing that did disappoint me as the lack of universal design optimization. This sweet math app will work on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, but it doesn’t make good use of the iPad’s large screen real estate. Stop thinking small, math nerds.
With a price tag of $1.99, Nerdtris won’t break the bank. It’s one of the few apps I wouldn’t mind seeing a free trial for, just so users can find out if this is the sort of game for them before they dive in. Despite this, I found this math game insanely addictive, and a lot more fun than I expected. Sure, my programmer friends may have slaughtered my high score in a matter of minutes, but I still had fun with the app thanks to its user-friendly features and easy gaming style. Nerdtris is a math hit. Go get it.
Nerdtris iPhone app requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
