LocalPhone: iPhone Apps Written Review
When it comes to making international or long distance calls, you used to have to expect a large bill at the end of each month. There was no real way around this, as making calls to London to talk to your Gran simply wasn’t made cheap. However, in the modern age we have a plethora of Internet-enabled phoning options, not least of which is LocalPhone by the developer of the same name. The app makes it blissfully simple to place calls out to foreign countries and on a shoestring budget, to boot. For our full review of the app, you need only to scroll on down below the break.
Concept and Functionality
As stated, the idea behind LocalPhone is fairly simple: The app ties directly into your iPhone’s data connection, instead of your radio frequency side, to place calls. This means that the app is dialing all on its own, and without the need to pull through your provider’s network. This translates directly to a lot of saved money on your end, as calling internationally with the big dogs like Verizon, Spring and AT&T can really rack up a bill.
All in all, LocalPhone is about as simple as it gets, but without losing functionality. There’s really no downside to what it has to offer, as calls made out are infinitely cheaper than the standard rate. Furthermore, with 4G integration and support for Wi-Fi networks, you can place your calls without draining your monthly data usage, or by hitting it as hard as possible. The choice is completely up to you, and that’s exactly the way we like it.
Design and Layout
We have to admit, we quite like the way that LocalPhone looks at us, too. It’s got a gorgeous yet simple interface that features prominently the flags of the nations you’re dialing to. This makes it easy to find our mates in a pinch, and it’s also just pleasing to look at. Did we mention that the app also supports over-data texting? Both texting and calling are wrapped in their own sending designs and layouts, and both function brilliantly. We even had little to no problem maintaining connectivity. All in all, it’s clear that LocalPhone has been very well thought out during its design, and the end result shines.
At the end of the day, LocalPhone is an app that offers a free price tag and a whole lot of savings to put on top of it. Sure, you’ll need a LocalPhone account and a few spare pence to place some calls: But when compared to what the carriers themselves would charge for the same calls, you’re getting a whole lot of catch-up-power out of not a lot of coin spent with LocalPhone.
LocalPhone requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
