Jellyflug: iPhone App Written Review
We talk about it a lot, but we really do mean it: One of our favorite genres on the iPhone happens to be that of the arcade game. However, before we fell in love with repetitive score-based gaming, we first had a passionate love for platforming games. Sadly, the whole field went out of style, but now we have Jellyflug by developer Troll, Inc. and life seems good again. The app is a gorgeous testament to what can be done within the genre on the iPhone and iPad, and without it, we can guarantee you that the last few hours would have been far less fun. We love what the app is doing, and to get the full dirt on what that means, you need only to scroll down below the break!
Concept and Gameplay
If you’ve ever played a platforming game before, then you’ve already got an excellent handle on how Jellyflug works: You play as a bacterium escaping a cleaning. During your travels through the levels, you’ll need to collect various powerups and bonuses while navigating steep passageways and copious enemies. The developer has pulled out all the stops with this one, delivering a platforming experience that’s spot-on for the classic console titles we used to love, however. You’ll be throwing your babies as ammo, hurling them into enemies and obstacles. You’ll be collecting powerups to complete specific challenges. You’ll even be battling bosses (and the boss fights in this app are incredible) at the end of each mammoth level. We really do mean that, too. These levels are massive, and if you’re looking for an entire load of platforming action to work through, there’s no other app we can recommend. The basic controls are deceptively simple, as this app sports and supports a vast amount of both gameplay and depth. Rock-solid is the word that comes to mind with Jellyflug.
Design and Graphics
Even better, Jellyflug manages to create and maintain its very own world. The detail kept within the levels is spot-on for what we expect with a classic platformer. You’ll be seeing a multitude of characters, both good and bad. You’ll also see a wide variety in backgrounds, obstacles, and powerups, all of which work quite well to keep the game interesting. Combine all of this with clever level design and well-thought-out layouts and you’ve got one incredible package on your hands.
Usually we would find a reason to gripe about an app that costs nearly two bucks in the App Store: But this time around, we’re simply going to say this. Get Jellyflug now if you have ever enjoyed a platformer in your life. The game is a direct homage, and one that we simply could not get enough of. It’s got classic layouts, beautiful worlds, and more than enough content to choke an horse. Not to mention simple controls that take seconds to learn. All in all, it’s a winner to the core. This one comes highly recommended
Jellyflug requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
