A Tale Off the Top of My Head: iPad App Written Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we get to review a whole lot of eBooks for children. However, very rarely do we get to review a story or an app that speaks widely to people of all ages, using beautiful graphics, a moving story, and an incredible interface to get the job done. Today’s offering, though—A Tale Off the Top of My Head by developer La Souris Qui Raconte—does exactly this and more. It’s a wonderful sample of what can truly be done on the iPad when a developer is willing to go all-out. And with a fair price thrown in, too, we can sing nothing but praises for the app. All of which, you’ll find listed out below in our full review!
Concept and Functionality
As stated, A Tale Off the Top of My Head is quite certainly an eBook redone for the iPad’s modern screen. This means you’ll get a story, pages to flick through, and artwork to look at. Being a modern app, though, the artwork is animated in a gorgeous way, the story can be read to you, and the pages can be slid through with the touch of a button. We’ll start with the story: It’s a tale that is aimed at those age 8 and up, but one that we loved. It’s slightly dark, always heart tugging, and endlessly engaging. There’s a whole lot of material here to enjoy, no matter what your age. The artwork goes hand-in-hand with this, too. It’s got a sort of goth nouveaux look that we found endlessly entertaining. Add to this a slick, hand-drawn interface, and you’ve got one solidly impressive package on your hand. And in case you were wondering, menu and page navigation is as simple and as quick as you hope it would be. Just tap a button here and there to get where you need to go.
Artwork and Presentation
Let’s talk a bit more about the artsy substance here, though! The app comes in two languages, both French and English. We happen to speak both languages, and in our opinion, both are equally as beautiful: No small feat, we assure you. The writing is all around awe inspiring, as are the graphics. The tale is beautifully depicted as you read it, and both narrators have done a splendid job dramatizing the plot. All in all, the entire package is extremely professional, and we can hardly find a thing to complain about.
Ordinarily we would say an app that costs nearly four bucks in the App Store is pricy, but when the application involves a story both you and your children will adore, we feel the price tag is worth it. A Tale Off the Top of My Head is a truly inspiring work, and we hope the developers continue to pump out titles exactly like it in the future. Good job, lads! This one is a keeper.
A Tale Off the Top of My Head requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
