Reviewed by Philip Chan

Sometimes you just want a good laugh, whether it is at yourself or your friends. Imagine taking a photo and making it, well, a more goofy looking version of you and your pals. The WhatsApe app from developer digipoc will do just that for you. It is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad, and runs on iOS 4.0 or later.

Features:

The basic premise of WhatsApe is for the user to take a picture of themselves or their friends and use it as the primary feature of pairing it with silly looking ape images. When the user first loads the app, they will be prompted to either view more apps available from the developer, or proceed on to the actual app. They can then select their “alter ego” ape image.  There are six images total, and once the user lands on the desired image that they want, they can then select the “tale picture” function. From there, the user can select to change from the device’s front view facing picture taking, or back view facing picture taking. Once they select the picture, they have the further option of retaking the photo or proceeding to the next step. Then will then be prompted to chooses a filter or background theme. There are seven total filters to choose from. Once the filter is chose, the user will then be prompted to choose from 6 different goofy headlines. They can also opt to have a blank heading if they want.  From there on, the user can either save it to their device for future reference or immediately share with friends and family via their Facebook account.

Appearance and Layout:

The overall appearance of WhatsApe is decent. The layout is very easy and simple to navigate and figure out. The graphics and images are very basic, nothing over the top, yet, nothing to exciting. There are in-app ads that show up on the bottom of the main preview screen, but they aren’t anything to distracting.

Value:

To summarize, for WhatsApe being offered for 99 cents is an okay deal. It’s a silly app that not everyone would be clamoring to purchase. However, for those who do get it, it still would provide some decent entertainment and laughs, especially those who love to poke fun at themselves and their friends, whether in person, or in ape form.

WhatsApe iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review. The iPhone app reviews rating: [Rating: 4/5]
