UP 2012 Free: iPhone App Written Review
We’ve been following the European Championship with some vigor: Okay, so we’ve been watching every match with our bloody eyes glued to the tele. Either way, just because we’re excited for the upcoming finals match does not lessen the value of UP 2012 Free by developer DND Arts. The app is a unique Tiny Wings inspired take on the championship that’s guaranteed to keep you entertained before and after the match—just remember to look up during, lads! For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break.
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, UP 2012 Free is two parts celebration of the Euro Cup and one parts Tiny Wings. What does that mean? It means this: The app is an outright jubilee centered around the fact that Ukraine and Poland are hosting the games this year. As such, the app features four cities from each nation, letting you play through them, watching the skyline pass by. The gameplay itself is a lot like the aforementioned iOS classic. You slide a finger along as your ball cruises through the hills, sending the toy rocketing up and down the slopes and into point-winning flags and other objects. It’s a lot of fun, but to be honest it’s not so much a game as it is a more relaxing venture. There’s no real point value to meet, and there’s no real incentive to “do better” later. In fact, the only reason one would play the game is the only reason one might watch the cup: It’s fun, it’s a celebration of being European, and it’s bloody energizing. And that’s good enough reason for us!
Design and Graphics
Overall, we had very little problems with the app’s graphics. It looks great, and we especially liked the representation of the various cities included within the app: You really will get a skyline view as you roll along. However, we did thing the hills and the physics engine might have stood up for some tweaking. Then again, without any other point at the wheel besides simply enjoying the games, it’s hard to argue with what the developers have done. And besides! The app gives us 10 unique footballs to choose from, which is certainly one heck of a distraction!
At the end of the day, UP 2012 Free boils down to this: Are you bloody bonkers for the games? Have you been obsessing like an Austrian fanboy? If so, then you’re going to love UP 2012 Free. It’s a great homage to what’s happening (and sadly concluding) in Europe, and it’s right near our hearts as football fans. Best of all, it’s free in the App Store. So if that sounds like a bargain, jump on it soldier! The games will only last so much longer.
UP 2012 Free requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
