Snowmen Story: iPhone App Written Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, there’s nothing we like more than a good old fashioned arcade game. We love anything that has us fighting a clock, earning an high score, and generally blasting baddies with some cool weaponry. Snowmen Story by developer DFX Art fits rather nicely into the genre, providing us with some new chances to get our retro gaming gear on, as well as some innovative quirks that keep the game fresh. So if you’re looking for a new iPhone arcade option to go with, look no further than our full review of the app below! Starting with:
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, Snowmen Story fits very nicely into the arcade genre on the iPhone. However, the game’s concept itself is different enough to really hold our interest. For instance, rather than shooting the bad guys, you instead play as an evil snowman that wants to bother as many good snowmen as possible. You do this by pegging them with snowballs that you hurl in a sort of gun-like way. You can knock ones close to you for a few points, or really nail that sucker up on the mountain for a whole lot of them. You’ll also get to hit floating presents, Santa, and an entire menagerie of other objects that float about.
However, the coolest part is just how deep the Snowmen Story game world is. Sure, it’s a traditional arcade title. But, it’s also got lots of hidden gems, items, and secrets that you can poke and unlock for more points. In other words, you’ll be fighting the timer to get points while still enjoying your time exploring the level. That’s a cool concept, and we really can’t get enough of it here at the office.
Graphics and Design
Best of all, the app looks unbelievably gorgeous on the iPhone. It comes with an entire host of animations that are pleasant, lively, and do a great deal to ensure that you’re “stuck” within the game world. We also liked how simple and fun the controls were: It’s a cinch to learn to shoot the snowballs, and from there it’s all fun and games. We do think the app could do with a few more levels, as there’s only one, though. The included setting is certainly deep, but we’d like a little bit more content to snowplow our way through.
Then again, we can hardly knock Snowmen Story for its price! The app is free in the App Store, which means it will cost you nothing to enjoy. If you’d like to buy some additional time, you can do so in-app for a nominal fee. And with a mountain of secrets and repeat gameplay to work your way through, you’ll get a whole lot of mileage out of this small, endearingly great application for the iPhone.
Snowmen Story requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
