SearchHub: iPhone Video App Review
Like most of you, I find myself utilizing search engines, online dictionaries, maps and more on my iOS devices on a daily basis. If you’re tired of hopping from app to app, you’re in luck. The new SearchHub app by Unit Kay allows you to complete searches, look up words, scan your iOS libraries and even connect to the App Store right from a single, easy to use place.
The SearchHub iPhone app acts as a launch pad for any kind of search you want, with an internal browser, third party browser support, and integration with dozens of search applications, from Google to Tweetbot. The app is also designed to integrate with dozens of Japanese apps, in case that’s what you’re after.
It’s really quite simple to make the most of this app. You type a word into the waiting search bar, tap the engine, app or service you’re interested in using, and enjoy instant results. The SearchHub app also keeps a history of your searches and makes running them as easy as a single touch. Not too shabby if you ask me.
I’m particularly fond of how the app integrates with your iTunes music library. You can even access it with a single tap of a music note.
SearchHub is also extremely customizable. Using a simple _Q_ tag you can add any search site you wish to the app. It also supports computer integrated sync as long as you’re on the same Wi-Fi network, and allows you to import and export clipboards with ease. How’s that for smart?
Layout & Design:
While the features of SearchHub sweep me away, the design leaves me flat on the ground. There really isn’t much to it. While I am a big fan of simplicity and elegance, this app just screams for a bit of dolling up. It’s also not always very clear what you’re doing, so I wish the app had a slightly clearer help file that was easier to access.
You can swipe an item to the right or left to delete single searches which is very nice. An internal system to explore saved clipboard items, etc. would also be a nice touch.
For folks who crave a bit more connectivity or just want to have a one-stop shop for searching on their iOS devices, SearchHub is an awesome value. At $2.99 the price is moderate. Naturally, I’d like to see it a bit lower, or possibly with a trial version so buyers can find out if this is even the sort of app they’ll use. But then again, I’m always after a deal.
To sum up, SearchHub is well made and full of interesting features that help keep you organized. It could use a facelift, and possibly a trial period.
SearchHub iPhone app requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
