Combo Slash: iPhone Written App Review
When it comes to mobile gaming, action RPGs definitely have a special place in my heart. They remind a lot of their computer and console-based contemporaries, and come in all shapes and sizes. The latest to hit our desks here at The iPhone App Review is Combo Slash, from INT SQUARE. This title combines a cool story with tons of actions, and even features multiple gaming modes to keep you interested after hours of play. You can see a video demo of the app on YouTube. Let’s see how this fun new action RPG holds up to a little healthy critique.
Like most action RPG titles, Combo Slash features a mix of story, action and upgrade systems. There are tons of items to equip, and skills to build and acquire. This game is anything but boring.
Combo Slash features a joystick style control that takes you through each side-scrolling level with ease, and a set of attack and defense buttons that allow for combos of all kinds. It’s not a simple hack and slash game. There’s definitely some serious strategy to getting through each map in the allotted time and saving the girls of Calun Continent in style. The game actually features a handy duo of main action fighter and a support character (choose from Mage and Cleric for the support character).
I found Combo Slash an easy game to learn to play, although it definitely features some challenges. Each map is created uniquely every time you play, so you cannot simply memorize campaigns. The game also features three modes: normal, survival and Hell, opening up the app for hours of gameplay.
I also found the brevity of the app’s storylines refreshing. It’s easy to skip over them entirely if you’re more of an action junkie as well. Not bad for a new title featuring a whole new world.
Layout & Design:
While Combo Slash is easy to play, and I’m a huge fan of the on-screen controls, I did find the graphics a bit fuzzy for my taste. Sometimes there is so much going on between the two characters and huge waves of attackers that it can be hard to decipher the screen, find yourself and make a solid play.
However, I feel like basic graphics are kind of par for the course on most action RPG titles, so I wasn’t horribly surprised or unhappy with the look and feel. Combo Slash also features some cool anime-inspired pop out graphics that accompany the story line.
As action RPGs go, Combo Slash is a solid title, with good action, passable graphics and tons of upgrade and skill systems to play with. That’s why at $1.99, I think combo Slash is a great value. If you like the action RPG genre, this is definitely a title you want to check out.
Combo Slash iPhone app requires iOS 4.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
