Bubble Billy: iPhone App Written Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we don’t think there’s a genre we see more of than physic puzzlers for the iPhone. Ever since the moment Angry Birds hit the big scene, we’ve seen more than our fair share of titles within the field, and as such, we like to think we’re sort of experts at what’s good and what’s not. With that in mind, we’d like to introduce you today to one of our favorite new apps, Bubble Billy by developer ZAO. The app brings along an healthy amount of slingshot style puzzling, as well as heaps of cute graphics and engaging small touches. Best of all, the price is right, too! So if you’re looking for our full review, you’ll find it listed out below.
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, Bubble Billy is very squarely in the genre of physics puzzler for the iPhone. Now, this can mean a number of different things, so we’re going to clarify just a bit: Bubble Billy is the sort of app that has you shooting your character (that’d be Billy) into a safe bubble that’s housed somewhere else on the map. To do so, you’ll need to navigate an ever changing series of obstacles, enemies, and bounce pads to safely reach the end. This may sound simple, but trust is, it really isn’t. And with more than 75 “mind-bending” levels, there’s a whole lot of content to work through. All in all, you’ll have to work pretty hard to avoid the spiky monsters that will burst your bubble—so to speak. And with so many different (mostly weather inspired) power ups and game changes, it’s really quite the moving mixture of items. In fact, our only real complaint with the app is that it uses the same sort of slingshot controls as Angry Birds: It’s a bit naff, but we’re willing to live with it.
Design and Graphics
That being said, the graphics that come with Bubble Billy are absolutely brilliant in a very unique way. The game can easily be described as “cute” but we much prefer the word “abundant.” Everything about it, from the lushness of the colors to the talkative cast and sound effects create an overwhelmingly absorbing environment. The gameplay itself is just alright, but the entire package that it comes wrapped in is just superb. So all in all, our hats go off to the lads at ZAO for their killer design.
And at a dollar in the App Store, we can find hardly anything to complain about with the app. It’s got smooth gameplay, great graphics, and more than enough content to keep us busy through several morning commutes. All in all, the game is an easy recommendation for those in the mood for a new action puzzler to peruse.
Bubble Billy requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
