Bar Time Lite: iPhone Written App Review
Finally, there’s an app that can help you make the most of an evening out, and make it home safe and sound, without breaking a sweat. This freebie wonder is called Bar Time Lite, and it comes to us courtesy of evoLove Design. Not only does this app make use of handy dandy GPS technology to help you find the party in record time, it also believes in partying responsibly, something I can definitely get behind. Let’s see how this app stands up to a little friendly critiquing here at The iPhone App Review.
Fear not party goers, Bar Time Lite is a simple app that can help you out even if you’ve had a few. This app uses your current location info to create a customized local list of the nearest bars and clubs. It even makes dialing up directions or calling the bar for info a one-step process. You can view search results in a list format or a simple map format. There’s also a third tab with similar info about area cab companies, making it a snap to find a safe way home after an evening of hitting the town hard.
For a free app, those features are pretty sweet. However, it seems like it would be really easy for this app to be a lot better. For example, if you tap on a bar name in the map view, it doesn’t take you to more info about the bar, it simply reverts to the map view without a single bar selected.
Also, I found myself wishing for bar info profiles, or at least links to the bar, club and taxi service websites so it was easy to see if a bar was 21 and up for example, or if it has a certain dress code. I get that the devs seemed to be going for simple, but it feels like there are some missed opportunities in the app that I’d really like to see addressed for it to earn a higher score from me.
Layout & Design:
When it comes to using apps while in pursuit of a party, simple is as simple does. The Bar Time Lite iPhone app definitely takes this approach, organizing the app into three super-simple tabs: one for bars, one for clubs and a third for cabs. There are no pesky settings tabs or any additional complications. As I mentioned earlier, there is an option to view search results as a list or in an extremely responsive map view, but that’s it as far as frills go.
Again, I get it. You don’t want to ask party-goers to perform brain surgery on their iPhones, you just wanna get them from point A to point B safely. So I applaud the Bar Time Lite app’s simple approach and execution. I found the map interface extremely cooperative, a good sign that this app is solid from the bottom up. Sure, I wished for a bit of sparkle, but I’ll take ease of use any day.
When you consider the easy, high-demand service this app provides and it’s entirely gratis price tag, it’s hard to turn it down. So don’t. Next time you go out, make Bar Time Lite your wing-app. You’ll be glad you did.
Bar Time Lite iPhone app requires iOS 5.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
