Turtle’s Day at the Beach: Written iPhone App Review
Do you like the added experience of reading with your kids and having activities to complete simultaneously? Then Turtle’s Day at the Beach from developer Blacktop Interactive, LLC will do just that for you. It is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad, and runs on iOS 4.0 or later.
Turtle’s Day at the Beach is an interactive book reading app. When the user loads the app, they will be prompted with the option of having the reading selections read out loud to them by the default narrator voice, or read the book app themselves. To go to the next reading page, the user will tap the bottom right hand corner of each book app page or tap the arrow icons located on the top portion of each page. Throughout the reading, the user interacts by finding missing objects such as a lost beach ball or a miscellaneous seashell. They are also given the challenge of locating 5 starfish throughout the book app. Each time they locate a starfish it gets recorded and shows up on the top of the screen as being found by highlighting one of the five stars shown. Also, at the end of the story there is a coloring activity available.
There is an information icon located on the upper right hand corner of the app to allow the user to adjust the background music and narration settings, or skip ahead to the coloring activity.
Appearance and Layout:
The overall appearance of Turtle’s Day at the Beach is very well done and appealing to the user. The background music matches perfectly with the reading, and instead of being distracting, it actually enhances the user’s reading experience. Also every time the user successfully locates a specified item, a congratulatory special effect will sound off. Navigation and layout is simple and easy to figure out, and the user should have no problem understanding the primary purpose of the app.
The overall value of Turtle’s Day at the Beach is decent. It is a great reading and interactive app for children, and parents can enjoy the convenience of the options of having the reading read out loud for their children for them, or reading the book app together with their children. Since it is recommended for children ages three and up, it is not geared for all ages and audiences. However, for younger kids and their parents, this is a fun and engaging reading app that will provide plenty of entertaining time together.
