Leonard’s Gatorville Fair HD: iPad App Written Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, there’s nothing we like more than a good old arcade game. Additionally, we’re also partial to anything that harks back to our childhood spent in the American South. As such, we’re absolute suckers for the swamp-infested, beat blasting action that is Leonard’s Gatorville Fair HD by developer Sidecar Productions. The app is a solid piece of fun that takes a while to get used to, but blossoms once learned. The price is a bit high, but if you’re ready to see our whole thought on this gator-ridden number for the iPad, you’ll find it below beyond the break!
Concept and Gameplay
As stated, Leonard’s Gatorville Fair HD fits very squarely into the well-beaten genre of arcade title. What kind of arcade game is it, though? Well, the app comes across as a mix between whack-a-mole and a timing-based game. The idea is that you, Leonard the gator, are having a bit of a mole problem. These buggers keep coming up through the toilet seats, and it’s up to you to whack them and send them packing. However, not all the critters are made the same. You’ll need to tap and swipe in specific combinations to get them out. If you couldn’t guess already, this is absolutely genius. You see, when things get rough and you’ve got multiple moles to deal with at once, you’ll also need to remember the combination that knocks them out of play. When time is short and blood pressures are high, this is certainly not an easy task. Land quite a few combos and you’ll also get a pleasant bonus for your efforts. Oh, and if you collect enough water, Leonard can flush out all the invaders in one go, saving you some time. All in all, it’s an incredible combination, and one that we absolutely love on the iPad’s spacious screen.
Graphics and Design
For an app with a name like Leonard’s Gatorville Fair HD, we didn’t expect quite as good of graphics as we actually got. This is a good thing. You see, the app looks pretty stellar on the iPad. The rodents have been very well animated, as is Leonard the gator himself. Likewise, the aforementioned swiping and tapping game mechanic adds so much fun to the game it’s nearly unreal. Our only complaint has to do with levels: We’d like to see more of them! Not that the content here is lacking, we’d just always like to see a little more oomph for our buck.
On another note, we do feel the four dollar price tag on Leonard’s Gatorville Fair HD is slightly too high. We would gladly have payed more in the neighborhood of two. That being said, you will get your money’s worth in swamp-booted, action packed arcade gameplay. And if that sounds like a bargain, then more power to you! This one comes recommended.
Leonard’s Gatorville Fair HD requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
