Heart Rate Cam: iPhone Video App Review

Recent advancements in facial recognition are, frankly, pretty darn cool. The latest app to make use of this ever-evolving technology is called Heart Rate Cam, and it’s an app that uses facial recognition software and a super complicated algorithm to calculate your heart rate right on your iOS device. While we do not suggest using the application to replace information from a professional, it’s actually pretty darn cool that you can get that sort of info from your iPhone. Let’s see how this app from Intra Labs holds up to a little healthy critique.

As my brief description indicated, the sole purpose of the Heart Rate Cam iPhone app is to use your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to calculate your approximate heart rate via facial recognition software. The app actually makes use of your device’s high frame rate and an algorithm monitoring subtle changes in the blood flow to  your face to calculate heart rates.

Heart Rate Cam also supports sharing screen shots via Twitter, Facebook or email. As I mentioned briefly, this app is intended for entertainment purposes only, so I don’t see the app having a super wide range of applications.

However, for a laugh, or a cool party trick, it’s hard to beat Heart Rate Cam and its dual camera support. I was particularly impressed with its usefulness this Memorial Day weekend in monitoring our heart rate as it got super hot outside. The app’s also half off for Memorial Day, which doesn’t hurt a bit.

Using Heart Rate Cam is deceptively easy. That means the app is pulling all kinds of high stakes math shenanigans, and all you have to do is point your iOS device towards someone’s face. User info and simply controls are just a swipe away, which is handy.

The app is also universally optimized, and locks on with a surprising amount of accuracy and speed. The speed of the results rests mainly on the quality of ambient light in your area while you try to use it. Make sure you give this app a shot in brightly lit areas for optimal results.

Overall Value:

With the Memorial Day sale in effect, you can pick up Heart Rate Cam for $.99. Again, not too shabby for a solid party trick. Normally, the app’s going to run you $1.99. Nope, this app won’t break the bank, but its limited range of applicability keeps my rating here pretty moderate.
