Gold Rush! – Expanded Edition: Written and Video iPhone App Review
Do you like to build and construct things? Do you like to be the brains behind a project and be the one who can take credit for sound engineering? How about mixing that interest in with a historical theme? Gold Rush from developer Darren Gates is just the perfect game for you! It is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and runs on iOS 4.3 or later.
Imagine it’s 1849, and the you are one to help many miners that have struck it rich transport their gold safely! In Gold Rush you will need to garner and use your supplies wisely to lay tracks and build bridges to assist miners get from each mining place to the next.
Upon initial game app load, you will be prompted with a detailed tutorial. You basically will need to start building your bridge by laying out tracks. To do so, you will need to tap the starting point and drag it to the length you want to set it at. When a green circle shows, that means that you have created a stable connection point. If a red circle shows, that means it is a non-permitted point. You can use additional bridge bottom supporters such as wood girders and long logs. Upper bridge support will be achieved by using rope. However, you cannot build your tracks into the ground, and if attempted, the action will be denied. If your bridge is not built with sufficient support then miners can lose some of their gold along the way.
The key thing is to build a more than suitable bridge that will last for a long time and with the least amount of supplies as possible. You can test out the steadiness of your bridge by selecting the play button icon and watch as the miners successfully or unsuccessfully make it across your bridge.
Appearance and Layout:
The graphics on Gold Rush are fantastic and comical. The overall layout is simple to understand and functions and settings are easy to navigate through. Icons for game play and game functions are clear cut and relatively self explanatory.
The background music is spot on. It is your typical western theme, country style music that never gets old. It is entertaining and yet, non-distracting at the same time.
For being 99 cents, Gold Rush is a great deal. This will definitely spark those who have any interest in construction, building, and engineering, but will also cater to those who like a challenge and appreciate the feeling of a job well done, especially if based on a concept of their own design. Since the instructions and game images are pretty clear and detailed, this app can be played by most ages and all audiences.
