Fantastic Journey: iPhone App Written and Video Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, there’s nothing we like more than a good challenge! And no, we aren’t being sarcastic. We like anything that makes us think twice, try harder, and attempt to go for that bigger high score. All of this is, of course, simply to say that we’re introducing you to Fantastic Journey by developer Chitralekha Productions. The app comes with a unique, flying-based arcade styling that’s every bit as entertaining as it is bloody hard! So if you’re looking for a new game to kill the morning commute with, then step right up, Soldier! We’ve got our full review lined up below and more.
Concept and Gameplay
The central concept locked away beneath Fantastic Journey is relatively simple: You must guide a plane from one end of the level to the landing strip that’s kept at the other side. Along the way, you’ll need to dodge copious amounts of obstacles, including moving insects, giants, and other winged creates. You will also need to rescue a few of the survivors that are floating about on parachutes. To do so, you’ll need to successfully navigate some wicked traps, and some nearly impossible situations. Oh, and you’ll only get three lives before you have to start the level over. Sound like a good time yet? Because it completely is!
The game offers a whole lot of challenge for what you’ll get. Completing the levels in full (getting all of the escapees and not dying) is really quite the pickle. However, the simple one-touch controls make it a breeze to fly, while the additional speed boost help to flesh-out the boring bits.
Design and Interface
Better yet, the game looks pretty snazzy on the iPhone, too! It’s got all the hallmarks of an iPhone classic, including fun animations and smooth controls. However, we do feel like some of the levels could have been designed a bit better. We honestly do like a challenge, but in some cases, we felt like a level was next to impossible to beat without dying first. Likewise, we also feel like the levels are a bit repetitive. There’s an heck of a lot of content to play through, but you’ll be doing the same mechanics over and over. There are no powerups to be had here, which would have gone a long way toward polishing off the otherwise solid (if at times a bit hair pullingly hard) gameplay.
Still, we can hardly knock Fantastic Journey for its value. The app costs only a dollar in the App Store, which strikes us as a fair price no matter how you slice it! It’s a great game with a solid concept and more than enough content to keep you involved. And as future updates iron out the kinks, we can only expect bigger, better things out of Fantastic Journey.
Fantastic Journey requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
