EZ Math Flashcards: iPhone App Written Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, one of the things we like most about the iPhone and iPad as a platform is its potential to help us educate a whole new generation of tech-oriented youngsters. Gone are the days where complex physical flash cards are needed to teach our kids their arithmetic. With all of that in mind, may we introduce you now to EZ Math Flashcards by developer Island Time Technologies. The app makes it incredibly simple to help your little student master all varieties of mathematics, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. All of this for a scant one dollar in the App Store, to boot! For our full review of this educational tool, check below beyond the break!
Concept and Functionality
As stated, the app is primarily intended to be a utility for teaching your children the most basic of math skills. The app does this by allowing you, the teacher, to select a range of numbers for the student to play with. Numbers range from zero all the way up to 99, and can be arranged in a number of different ways. You can tell the app to use 13 and below, but only to include addition or subtraction. Or, you can use 12 but only multiples of, that way your child gets a firmer grip on their times tables. It’s a rather complex set-up, but it allows for a wider age range than we typically see with these sorts of applications.
That being said, the developers understand that this stage can be somewhat tricky. As such, they’ve included a “use all numbers” switch that does exactly what it says it will. So, if your child is old enough and needs the practice, the app can instantly supply them with a never-ending chain of difficult problems. And when they’re finished, the app will give a printable readout of their results for you to look over.
Design and Layout
Our only real complaint with the app is its looks. The app isn’t the most gorgeous study tool we’ve ever seen on the iPhone, and though it isn’t a deal breaker, we do wish the apps sturdy customization menu were a little more streamlined. We feel like some rolling wheels or drop down menus would add an awful lot to the experience. Aside from this, though, the actual problem solving interface is spot-on, and we wouldn’t change a thing. Same goes for the test results.
And considering the app costs only a dollar in the App Store, you’ve really got nothing to lose by handing it over to your child. It comes with a lot of learning potential, a sturdy age group to work with, and a decent interface. With all of this taken into consideration, EZ Math Flashcards is an easy recommendation for any beginning math student.
EZ Math Flashcards requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
