Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports: iPhone Written App Review
Just in time for this year’s Olypmics there’s Curly’s, a guide to all 72 sports appearing in this year’s games, sans jargon and illustrated in adorable card format. This app comes to us courtesy of WilsonFletcher, and it delivers a ton of information in a highly palatable package. With an easy-to-digest price tag of $.99, it’s easy to see why Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports is sure to be a slam dunk.
Utilizing a simple scroll design, Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports organizes 72 different types of sports and sporting events in a neat, and quirky, card design. Simply tapping on any card opens an info section that gives users the deets on each sport, from rules and tactics to fun stories and facts.
I was really impressed with the breadth of knowledge available in this app. Wanna know how The Beatles helped make beach volleyball big, or how fast a boxer’s punch is? It’s all there, complete with a snappy tour guide, obviously named Curly.
It is worth mentioning that the app is designed for Olympic sports only. That means if you search “football” you’ll be reading about the non-American sort. You also won’t find baseball on the list. But off-beat sports such as BMXing and Judo have their own, well written sections. The app also allows you to share interesting facts via Twitter, Facebook and email, and a predictive search option makes using the app a snap.
Layout & Design:
Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports iPhone app sets itself apart with adorable illustrations and a snappy UI. Sure, the real star of the app is the content (seriously, some of this stuff is downright amazing), but it’s nice that users won’t have any issues finding out the origins of synchronized swimming.
As I mentioned earlier, each sport is represented by its very own card. Each card rocks a quirky illustration, and spiffy stylized borders keep the content eye-popping.
With a tasty tag of just $.99, it’s easy to see why folks checking in on the Olympics simply must check out this app. The price is right, the facts are fresh and you really owe it to yourself to find out what the stakes are for the canoe slalom. It’s way cooler than Googling each event. Get prepared people. The Olympics are coming, and with Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports you can pass yourself off as at least ten times more interesting and interested than you really are on the cheap.
Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports iPhone app requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
