The classic Korean folk tale of “Do gie bi”, a whimsical fright tale, has been turned into an illustrated children’s book app, in the form of The Scariest Thing in the World HD. Developed and released by S-Mobile, this app is currently free for a limited time.

Features:

The Scariest Thing in the World HD  is basically an illustrated children’s book with additional features. There are page-turner animations, minigames, and full-color illustrations to keep the user entertained. It’s aimed at younger children, and designed to be read aloud by their parents. Children will probably enjoy the added mini-games in the app, including puzzles relating to the story and a Magic Ink feature. Also, the “Read to Me” function with its auto-narration approach is pretty awesome. Overall, it has a decent set of features, but it would be nice to see more minigames to increase this app’s replay value.

Graphical Layout:

Like the other app from this developer that I’ve reviewed at The iPhone App Review (KaguyaHime-The Bamboo Priness HD), the layout of The Scariest Thing in the World HD sports a fantastic storybook layout. Ontop of the traditional book format is excellent animations in the form of a pop-up book (remember how fun those were as a kid?). Turn the pages by swiping the page, or use the auto-page turn feature. It’s designed to be read aloud with your child, with optional subtitles and languages options in English or Korean. The HD illustrations look quite sharp, especially on retina display devices. The graphics remind me of whimsical fairy tales I would have read to me as a child, and really fit the theme of the story quite well.

Educational Value:[Rating: 4/5]

As a free app (free for a limited time!), The Scariest Thing in the World HD is a pretty decent deal. It takes up a little more space on iOS than most books (~38 mb), but this is to be expected with its colorful images and animations. The actual popularity of this storybook app may be more limited to Korean audiences that are more familiar with this traditional Korean story. Still, for audiences in learning the cultural tales from other countries, The Scariest Thing in the World HD for the iOS is a pretty solid choice.

The Scariest Thing in the World HD iPhone app requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
