Saavn Music: iPhone App Written Review
A few years back we remember something really cool happening in the United States and United Kingdom: Bollywood, the style of music and film popular in India, became hugely popular. During that period, a lot of people heard their first film scores, or even saw their first Bollywood movies. And now, thanks to Saavn Music by the developer of the same name, those looking for yet another hefty dose of Indian music can get their fill and then some. The app provides users with free, streaming-friendly Indian music at absolutely no charge. And with playlist controls and smooth playback, there’s no reason not to give it a go!
Concept and Functionality
As stated, Saavn Music has one goal, and one goal only: To get you as much Indian music as it possibly can, and to give you as much control over it as possible. Firstly, this starts with the ability to search for your favorite artists, scores, tracks, etc. When you find a track you like, you can add it to a playlist, save it locally, or star it as one of your favorites. If you’ve linked up your Facebook account, you can also share it with your friends online. Oh, and of course, you can also simply play it within Saavn Music. On that note, the music player itself behaved flawlessly.
Saavn Music also serves up a few additional features to keep you coming back. For instance, there’s a surprise me button that will give you a random sampling of the app’s catalog. There’s also a Weekly Top 15 playlist to work your way through. Additionally, you’ll also find a streaming radio, though we couldn’t quite get this to work in Hindi—the only language currently available to us in-app. This seems like a small bug, though, and one that’s easily fixed.
Graphics and Design
However, perhaps the app’s biggest boon is the fact that it looks so darn good on the iPhone! The interface is nearly flawless, with springy, responsive buttons, and bright colors. We liked the tabbed list navigation, as well as the simplicity of the tabs along the bottom. Using our Facebook account to save and control playlists was also an huge boon for the app, as we hate signing up for a service every time we want to try out a new app. And with all the playback controls you could hope for, there’s nothing to be concerned about with Saavn Music’s design.
To cut straight to the chase, here’s the final rub on Saavn Music. The app is completely free in the App Store, comes with more music than one can shake a sheik at, and allows you to save your favorites on a whim. In other words, if you’d like to experience more of India’s finest, then there’s no better place to start than with Saavn Music. Give it a go today!
Saavn Music requires iOS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
