Mega Photo Booth: iPhone Written App Review
Taking photos? Lame. Now you can play with your pics in real time thanks to an awesome little app called Mega Photo Booth from Falstad.com. This app gives you 50 free, real-time effects that you can either apply to new pics and videos or to your old still photos. That’s a whole lotta fun for nada. Let’s see how this app stands up to The iPhone App Review critique.
With the Mega Photo Booth app you can apply gnarly effects to images. This app has one of the most comprehensive sets of photo and video effects I’ve ever seen. You have your standard halftone, sketch and light effects, and then others like the spinning cube, x-ray vision and even a few puzzle effects where you can actually slide pieces of your image around to solve a puzzle.
The point is, this is not like the sad little collection of effects that so many photo apps boast about. Mega Photo Booth is actually something special. And, as I mentioned earlier, 50 effects come to you at absolutely no cost. There is an option to add additional effects via in-app purchase (more about that in a bit), but there’s no need to sink a lotta dough or effort into the app. It’s instantly fun.
Being camera-dependent does mean you have to have at least one camera to use the app. It works quite well with dual camera iDevices as well, switching between the two with a single touch.
One of my only complaints about the app is that I wish it had an intro help file or a little how-to action. I had to read the app’s iTunes description to figure out that the actual effect scenes are interactive. All you have to do is touch them to play. A brief into would make it much easier to have fun with the app.
Layout & Design:
The most interesting design features in this app are the image effects, obviously. There’s a wide variety there, which lets me know that someone went into this project with a lot of imagination and heart. The results are evident.
There is a settings option in the app, but you have to actually select an effect to access it. I do wish it was available on the main screen, which, again, could help alleviate some user confusion.
While the first 50 effects are free, there is an optional $1.99 in-app purchase you can make to unlock even more. The app teases you into them too, by denying you access to the pages that contain them, even though you can see that they exist. As usual, my suggestion is to be more upfront about pricing and add ons. I hate being baited into spending extra cash. I recommend setting an original app price of $.99 and giving users everything instead.
Mega Photo Booth iPhone app requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
