Math Evolve: iPhone App Written and Video Review
Here at the iPhone App Review, we tend to see an awful lot of applications aimed at kids. We don’t see this as a bad thing, though: In fact, we rather enjoy it. We think the realm of early childhood education is infinitely better served on the iPhone than within the confines of a traditional book. Our case and point? Math Evolve by developer Zephyr Games. The app perfectly mixes classic arcade gaming and early developmental mathematics skills. In fact, it even goes all the way up to the more complex arithmetic problems we all remember and dread. It’s an incredible bargain, and to view our whole thought on this killer app, check below beyond the break!
Concept and Functionality
As stated, Math Evolve is two thirds classic arcade gaming and one third high-quality educational utility. The way the app presents this combination goes a little something like this: The player must guide an alien about space using a finger, helping him to blast baddies as they appear and dodge oncoming bullets. However, the user must also guide the protagonist into falling numbers, which are shoved into the equations at the top of the screen. If three numbers are collected and the equation makes sense, the player gets a bonus powerup that wipes all baddies off the screen. It’s a wicked combination, and one we cannot get enough of for our kids.
The app lets you, the parent, select the level of difficulty in both game and learning material. In this way, you can specify the height of the learning grade, as well as the challenge of the arcade itself. This allows for a wide age group potential, and makes Math Evolve even more a bargain.
Design and Graphics
Best of all, Math Evolve looks pretty fantastic on the iPhone. We really mean it. One of the things we look for most in an iPhone app aimed at kids is a quality set of artwork, which Math Evolve delivers in spades. The animations are incredible, the controls simplistic, and the backgrounds even brighter. All in all, we have no doubt that your child will find themselves enraptured by the application. And the puzzles themselves are ace, too. The educational value of Math Evolve is not to be diminished. If the app doesn’t teach your child math, then we have absolutely no idea what will.
We’ll say this as simply as we can. For the two bucks that Math Evolve costs, you could hardly find a better teaching tool. The game side of the app is endlessly engaging, the graphics are gorgeous, and the mathematics real as it gets. With all of that in mind, Math Evolve is easily a bargain for any concerned parent, and comes highly recommended.
Math Evolve requires iOS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
