Friendly Beasties: iPhone Video App Review
Looking for a new iPhone app to play obsessively? The new Friendly Beasties iPhone app from Scary Beasties Ltd is just the ticket. This game combines monster care in the style of the classic Tamagotchi and cool mini games with powerful customization and an insanely adorable world where you control the fate of a merry band of monsters. The results are pretty darn awesome. Read on to see how Friendly Beasties stacks up to our iPhone app review critique.
Concept & Gameplay:
While reviewing apps, I’ve seen a monster care style game or two in my time. So I was not predisposed towards loving Friendly Beasties just from reading the app’s description. However, mere moments after this little app hit my hands, it was clear that I was in love. Friendly Beasties is instantly cute, but not in an annoying way. A simple photo manipulation interface allows you to put your friends’ faces on the monster characters in the show. So, right off the bat, this app is specifically built for you.
In classic monster care game style, there’s an interface for feeding, cleaning up after, playing with and otherwise messing with your little monsters. You can also set up fences to separate the little guys if they aren’t quite getting along. That’s right, these little buggers have personality to spare. Sometimes they hit it off, and you may be blessed with a little monster baby that’s a mash up of the two originals. Other times they poke and annoy each other, so it’s a good idea to split up the huge space you have to play in.
I haven’t even mentioned the fact that the app has three high quality built in mini-games for you to play, and a handy way to kill off and resurrect your pretties if you change your mind about them. It also ties into Game Center for high score tracking and unlockable achievements. Friendly Beasties is easy to play, unique enough to captivate an adult player and kid-friendly. Sounds like a Holy Grail trifecta of fun to me.
Layout & Design:
As I mentioned, the Friendly Beasties iPhone app has a really large playing area. It’s built around a jungle motif, and the entire app is quite two-dimensional. However, there’s definitely plenty of visual interest, bright colors and cute characters. The fact that you have a fully functional photo manipulation interface is just icing on the cake of an already extremely well made app that’s super easy to use. I think the way the app combines the two faces you use if the little critters have a baby is pure genius.
At just a buck, Friendly Beasties earns my super value star status of approval. This app is way more interesting than I thought it would be, and appeals to a wide range of users. As I mentioned, the app really is kid-friendy. There are no advertisements or in-app purchase options. It’s just good ole straightforward fun wrapped up in a jungleicious package that I just can’t get enough of. The bottom line is this: Go get Friendly Beasties now.
Friendly Beasties iPhone app requires iOS 4.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
