Coign of Vantage: Written iPhone App Review

Revied by Philip Chan

Originally a popular online Flash game, Coign of Vantage is now available through iTunes. It’s been featured in Kotaku, Wired and several other game tech websites, including the popular PC gaming website Rock Paper Shotgun. Coign of Vantage is a newly-released puzzle app from developer BobbleBrook.

The basic gameplay concept in Coign of Vantage is fairly straight-forward. Users must rotate a 3D puzzle until it lines up with the original, putting their spatial skills to the test. At the same time, a timer is counting down, with additional time added on for each puzzle solved successfully. Gamers initially have 45 seconds to solve the puzzles, 10 seconds being added on each time a puzzle is successfully solved. Once a puzzle is solved, it is unlocked and added to the gallery view in the app. There is also an additional game mode available, called Ten on Time. In this version, gamers must solve a set of ten puzzles as fast as possible, using no more than 1.5 minutes to do so. The more time left at the end, the higher the gamer will score in this mode.
For additional game-sharing options, Coign of Vantage allows the user to post their scores to various social networking platforms, including Facebook and other options.
Even though Coign of Vantage is based on a game originally released in 2008, the gameplay hasn’t aged at all. It still feels fresh, with its 90 different puzzles. I was fairly impressed with the gameplay of Coign of Vantage. It’s exciting and addicting, but still rather relaxing at the same time. It’s received high marks online as a Flash game and the developers have made the transition to the iOS flawless.

Appearance and Layout:

Coign of Vantage

The developers of Coign of Vantage have taken a minimalist approach to the layout and game graphics of this fun app and it looks great. It’s a cinch to navigate, with just a few menu options and the two game modes on the landing screen. The actual puzzles look superub and are both challenging and rewarding to solve, as users line up the floating 3D pieces in the correct orientation.

At just $0.99, Coign of Vantage is a really affordable puzzle app. Add this great price ontop of the other great features, including the fun gameplay, excellent layout, relaxing soundtrack and 90 levels, and you have a very solid app indeed! I definitely recommend checking out Coign of Vantage for the iOS if you need a light puzzle fix or a fresh puzzle app today!

Coign of Vantage iPhone app requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.  A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review. The iPhone app reviews rating:
